A—16 HRGTC RADIDPST TOAD FORECASTS Daily Messages Expected to Increase Accuracy of Weather Man. : By the Associated Press. The weather man may do a better Job of predicting than usual in 1932-33, for he will have advanced information | on what kind of weather is moving down from the North Pole. Daily rtepcrts by radio from the Northernmost known land on the globe 600 miles from the Pole itself, will be sent by the Willlams-Maris Arctic Ex- pedition, which sails for the far North next June. The weather reports will be the first ever sent daily from a station so near cither Pole, said Dr, H. B. Maris of the | United States Naval Research Labora- tory, scientific director of the expedi- tion. The leader will be Capt. F. H Williams, United States Naval Reserve. | ‘Two years will be spent in the Arctic. Lonely Base is Selected. Besides these reports the expedition | will study air movements that affect ‘weather in the United States, measure | “earth currents” that flow through the | sea around Greenland, and test the temperature of the high czone layer that is belleved to influence radio | transmission. The expedition’s radio station and base will be at old Fort Conger, lonely outpost on bleak Ellesmere Island, where 50 years ago 18 of the 25 men of Greely's expedition starved to death because they could not communicate | qf with civilization. Fort Conger will be reoccupied by the expedition for the international polar year of 1932-33, during which scientists of all nations will occupy 50 stations in the Arctic and Antarctic for an intensive, simultancous study of unexplained happenings there that af- fect life in the temperate zones One of the mysteries is how changes ©of temperature in the upper atmos- phere affect radio. Another is the ef- fect of terrific winds that are believed to be blowing from 200 to 300 miles an | hour 30 miles above the earth. Data on the “earth currents” in | Greenland waters may help explain | “manetic storms” that disrupt radio, | teegraph and long-distance telephone ‘communication Two magnetic instruments will be | set up, one on the Greenland shore, the | """+ other across Robeson Channel on Ellesmere Island. The salt water and | earth will serve as a sort of transform- er, enabling the instruments to record the currents in the channel. From these records the expedition’s scientists hope to learn the nature of the cur- | rents and how their changes are re‘ lated to megnetic storms. The expedition’s ship will remain nt | Fort Conger through the Winters, and there will be two airplanes as well as the radio for added safety. | GUTENBERG BIBLE COPY SOLD FOR OVER $100,000 | London Book World A!tounded as | Volume Reported Kept for Century Appears. By the Associated Pitss. LONDON, November 9.—News that a | private collector had purchased at| auctior for considerably more than | $100,000 a paper copy of the prized | Gutenberg . Bible, of which only 41 coples are known to exist, astounded London’s book world yesterday. The volume was understood to have | reposed in the Continental Library for | more than a century and to be in splen- did condition. A paper edition of the Bible sold in New York a short time ago for $106,000 and a real vellum copyl for $50,000. The Gutenberg Bible was the first book produced from movable type and required five years to complete. It is praised for the beauty and strength of its paper, the luster of its ink, the boldness of its Gothic type and its superb binding. GAS & OIL Science Lake Discovered in West African Forest Belicved to Have Been Formed by Meteor. Discovery of a great lake probably | formed by a meteor in the dense, tropical forest of the Gold Coast colony in West Africa is reported by Malcolm McClaren in the journal of the Royal Geographic Society. Hitherto unvisited by a white man, | this lake lies at the bottom of a grea ll‘ crater approximately 240 feet deep. \il - Claren could find no other explanatio for ‘the great crater, There 1 1o vol- canic debris in the neighborhood. The | lake is about 5 miles in diameter and | has long been sacred to the Ashanti Negroes of the neighboring forests. The | waters are full of fish and, the ex-|{ plorer believes, most of the tabus con nected with the lake are economic for | the preservation of this food Supply. The common way of travel on the | 1ake is on pointed logs upon which the | fisherman 1lies face downward, paddling | with his hands and feet. T. R. H lCUD)nIH 1931.) CZECHOSLOVAKS SCORE DUTIES ON U.
