In accordance with the resolution of the General Convention at Denver, adopted at the recommendation of the Joint Committee of Twenty-one on Na- tional and World Problems, of which Bishop James E. Freeman of Washing- ton is chairman, tomorrow is set apart at Washington Cathedral and in this diocese as s day of prayer and peni- tence “to the end that the people may assemble to invoke God's mercy, to pray for His forgiveness, and to ask His guid- ance, that the Nation under God may | speedily be restored to the wholesome | ways of peace and happiness, of so- | briety and Christian practice, and obedience to His divine will.” Special prayers and intercessions will be offered at the Cathedral services to- morrow in accordance with this action of the General Convention, and will be conducted in the spirit and purpose of this day of prayer and penitence. Bishop Freeman will preach at the People’s Evensong in Bethlehem Chapel tomorrow at 4 p.m. when the service and sermon will be broadcast by radio over WMAL. Visitor Will Preach. i Dr. Bernard Iddings Bell, warden of St. Stephen's College, Annandale-on- Hudson, N. Y., will be the special preacher at the 11 a.m. celebration of the holy communion and sermon in the Bethlehem Chapel tomorrow morning. ‘The other services in Bethlehem Chapel tomorrow will include celebra- tion of the holy communion at 7:30 am. and morning prayer and litany at 10 o'clock. Holy communion is celebrated daily in the Bethlehem Chapel at 7:30 a.m.. except Monday, when it is celebrated in the Chapel of the Resurrection, and on Saturday, in the Chapel of St. Joseph of Arimathea at the same hour. An additional celebration of the holy communion is held on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in the Chapel of the Resurrection for the benefit of those unable to attend the earlier service. Armistice Day Rites Set. Special intercessions and prayers for the relief of the unemployed and those in trouble, for the guidance of rulers and leaders, and for the building of ‘Washington Cathedral will be offered at evening prayer in the Bethlehem Chapel every Friday at 4 o'clock. Bishop Freeman has appointed this service for these special intercessions to God “in this time of sore distress and urgent needs.” Those wishing to join in these intercessions are asked to come regu- larly to these Priday afternoon services, when the special prayers are to be of- fered at the altar of Bethlehem Chapel. On Armistice day, Wednesday, the service commemorative of President ‘Wilson will be held in the Bethlehem Chapel at 3:15 pm. and that com- memorative of all who served in the Great War will be held as usual on Armistice day in the Bethlehem Chapel at 4 pm. as part of the daily evensong. Bishop Freeman will deliver the com- memoration address for former Presi- dent Wilson and the service and address will be carried to the Nation over the xé:twork of the Columbia Broadcasting Firemen to Place Stone. A special service will take place on Monday at 3:30 p.m. when members of the District of Columbia Fire Depart- ment will place a memorial stone in the south transept of Washington Cathedral in commemoration of all their departed comrades of the local fire department. Bishcp Freeman will deliver the me- morial address. Ahe widows, children and other relatives of those honored at Monday's service have been especially invited to attend, as well as fire chiefs in neighboring cities. Herman McEKay Will Hold Armistice Service at Union Methodist Church. An Armistice service, with “The Christian Path to Permaneni Peace” s the sermon subject of Rev. Herman McKay, will be held tomorrow morning in Union Methodist Episcopal Church, Twentieth street near Pennsylvania avenue. The young people's service at 5:45 o'clock ‘will be followed by the Epworth | League service. Miss Mary Henderson will lead the league. Rev. Mr. McKay will speak at & o'clock on “A Fellow- ship of Reconciliation.” A supper conference will be held for all members and friends of the church Thursday evening. Dr. Benjamin W. Meeks, supcrintendent of the Washing- ton District of the Methodist Episcopal Church, will he present. Twente, missionary of the Evangelical Synod of North America, will be the speaker in the 11:15 am service tomorrow at Concordia Church, Twentieth and G streets. Rev. Mr. Twente has seen about 18 years of service as missionary in India. He is now on furlough in this country. In the German service at 10 am. Rev. Charles Enders will preach on “Spiritual Disarmament.” He will also speak in the evening worship hour at 8 o'clock on “Salvation Unto the Uttermost.” ‘The leader in the young people's meeting at 7:15 pm. will be Mr. Erd. Sizoo will preach a special Armistice day sermon on “Then Came the War.” At the evening service he will continue his sermon of last Sun- day evening, based on Germany. The subject will be, “Germany Today.” The_young people of the church are invited to a special Armistice day pro- gram, which will be observed at the young people’s service at 6:45 o'clock. PASTOR AND WIFE GUESTS AT RECEPTION BY CHURCH Rev. and Mrs. Newton Mercer Simmonds Entertained on Sixth Anniversary of Pastorate. A reception was held Wednesday eve- ning at Highlands Baptist Church ten- dered to the pastor, Rev. Newton Mercer Simmonds and Mrs. Simmonds, in recognition of the sixth anniversary of the pastorate. In the receiving line besides the pastor and Mrs. Simmonds was their daughter, Miss Margaret Sim- monds. Others assisting were the offi- cers of the church, Miss Edith E. Payne, clerk; E. H. As this occasion 80 nearly coincided with the thirty-fifth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Simmonds, | a basket of 35 pink roses was presented to Mrs, Simmonds. Motion pictures were shown of the various officers and groups of church organizations taken during the past few weeks. Refreshments were served by the Women's Circle. PEACE IS SERMON THEME Dr. F.-W. Perkins to Preach at Universalist Church. “The Will to Peace” is the theme of a sermon for Armistice day by Dr. F. W. Perkins, of the Universalist Na- tional Memorial Church, tomorrow at 11 o'clock. The church school will meet at 10:15 o'clock, except the adult class which follows the church service. The Ladies’ Aid Association will meet Tuesday with luncheon at noon and business session following. On Thurs- day a parish dinner will be served from 5 to 7 o'clock. A series of special programs has been arranged by the Luther Club of George Washington University for its meetings, held Sunday afternoons at 4 o'clock in Lisner Hall of the univer- sity. The last of the general topic, “Christianity and the World,” will be conducted tomorrow by Rev. Gerhard Lenski, pastor of the Grace Lutheran Church. The subject is “Christianity and Russia.” Dr. Raymond J. Seeger of the physics department of the university will con- duct the next serles of discussions on the subject, “Science and Religion.” The sub-topics are: November 15, Physics;” November 22, “Fancies of Astronom: November 29, “Fangles of Psychology;” December 6, “Facts of Christianity.” The final meetings of the first semes- ter will be devoted to the matter of “Life Choices.” Dr. Henry Snyder, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, will lead these discussions. Plans are being made for personal interviews of students with representatives of the United Lutheran Board of Education about the same time.
