TWENTY-THIRD INSTALLMENT. EIL NEILSEN had made good his threat. He had boasted on the that Gypsy Estrella that he would close it “tighter than a landlord’s fist.” All because Neil had been drinking—because he assumed, in the muddle of a disordered brain, an authority over her, Cathleen, that was not his right. She had brought this trouble on the gypsy. How could she make amends? Go to £ome one who would be glad to get the information and tell what she had seen that night in Washington Square Park? “Tell on Joe Neilsen, who had used his power to hurt those against whom his son harbored a senseless grudge? “Whatever happened to the six sus- pects in the police line-up?” she won- dered, and reproached herself that she had been 50 immersed in her own af- fairs that she had forgotten them. She picked up an evening paper from‘ the reading table provided for patrons of The Nook. Three of the “suspects” were being held. Three others were out on ball. Predictions were made that all six would be tried for assault with intent to kill. “Something’s got to stop Neilsen,”| Cathleen decided. “I must find a way to let him know that I was in the park that night.” That evening, when the diners in The Nook had thinned out to three or four scattered groups, two men sauntered in, selected a table well toward the rear of the room, and ordered black coffee When Cathleen “went to the pantry for extra silver she found Mrs. Hall there in a state of nervous excitement. “Those two men,” she said in a low| voice to Cathleen. *“Did you notice them. They're detectives, I'm sure.” “Detectives? What would they be here?” I don't know,” said shaking a troubled head. to find Kenneth. He might n herself brought the men| ee. She knew from their con- versation that they were of a stamp decidedly different from that of the| usual patron of The Nook. When she | returned to the pantry on another| errand Kenneth was there, peering | thi th the small pane of glass in the door leading into the main room. “‘They're dicks, all right,” “Probably prohibition agents. Then why are they here?” Mrs. Hall whispered, more agitated than ever. “I've never served a drop of intoxi- cating liquor in my place, nor do I al- low my patrons to serve it to them- selves when they bring it in.” “I don’t know,” Kenneth said darkly. “This doesn’t look good to me. Liquor has been known to be planted on prem- ises. What I can't figure is who would be out to get you, mother. You mind your own business and never step on any one's toes.” “Perhaps they just dropped in acci- dentally,” Cathleen offered hopefully. “If they are enforcement officers, a cup of your coffee ought to taste heavenly after what they've been sampling.” She tried to be reassuring—to reas- sure herself. She could not. In the back of her mind she saw two figures ;:nhgt‘n;mm {he shadow of & clump of ashington Square Park. One of the figures was S0 Mellsers “I' out and sit at a nearby table Where I can keep an eye on them,” Kenneth said. “In a few minutes, Kit, you come out and join me. If they pull any funny tricks, I'll crown them with zhng.nurm thing I can lay my hands “No, no, son! You must not raise your hand.” Mrs. Hall was more dis- tressed by Kenneth's threat than she had been by the menace of the myste- rious men. “You can’t be brought into it. Think of the disgrace.” | “I am thinking of it,” he said, his! Jaws working. “If it's going to come, I'm the one to take it—not you. You };;?_ out of it, mother. This is a man’s Cathleen could have blessed him for his stand. There was a chink in the hard shell of his ego, after all. She saw the tears brim in Mrs. Hall's eyes. You needn't bother coming in, unless you wish.” Cathleen fairly ran to her room Breathlessly she tore a sheet from her writing tablet. Then she perched on the trunk by the window and com- | posed herself to write her note of warn- ing to Joe Neilsen. Would she be in time to prevent further depredations on those who had befriended her? For | now she had no doubt that it was her presence in The Nook that had inspired the visit of the detectives. Either her father's determination to drive her back home or Neil Neilsen's resentment against Kenneth—possibly ~both—was behind the visit.
