Most of them have something to give which filu- minates the story of the attempts of the massive Sir John Palstaff to be romantic. There is also the juvenile variation of the theme in the battle for the favor of the daughter of one of the “wives.” The tempo which is required in presenting the un- abridged text of the play, in this in- stance at least, gives force to scenes which are veried and kaleidoscopic, and range frém the intensely prac- tical to the poetic. 1t is here that the genius of the Roy Brferd umental joke. the company, Pabla Drake and Dor- othy M: gham, have the mag- netism that for all time has been assoclated with such teams. They arouse keen curiosity as to what use will be made of their spirit in the succeeding plays. So far as this piay is concerned, they arrive and are found to eommand the proceedings. Roy Byford’s role of Sir John Palstaff is the most conspicuous in the performance, and is uniquely achieved, with an unregenerate de- votion to evil purposes, yet he holds the attention to a splendid plece of acting. Masfive in rmmam the embodiment of self-esteem, com- pletely deceived as to his own win- ning ways, he ents the part with the complete devotion to a_purpose which is the essence of the play. His desire to play the lover to two married women at the same time inspires an exhibition of traits which in the hands of a less capabie actor might be lost. Of the other members of the com- Eln_v. credit should be given to ! as the jealous hus- band, for the convincing nature of his vindictive schemes. That he is int roles in the other selections for the week is as- surance of further acquaintance with his talents. Numerous players could be mentioned for the of their work, including the more comic characters, and the young lovers, presented by Hilda Coxhead and Oyles Isham. Ethel Harper as Mistress Quickly, who is & go-be- tween for several affairs, has many lines and maintains her distinctive character ti thout. Ernest Ha: as the second of the aggrieved hus- bands, has few impressive lines, but in bearing and action during the play impresses the fineness of the character. ‘This com| is commissioned to bring forward the real Shakespeare the immortal. who uses the tools of STAR, WASHINGTON, is, breathing and ting a healthy kiek pleasure of Jiving.
