Florence Willard Day, Leader All Welcome Freewill Offering S STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1931. IDR.A. A STOCKDALE ERVICES are being held for the first time tomorrow in the new ‘West-rn Presbyterian Church, H street bctween Nineteenth and Twenticth streets. Rev. J. Harvey Dunham, pastor of Western Presbyterian Church since 1909, will | conduct the services. ‘The corner stone of the new church | was laid October 5, 1930. The late James B. Lamble, then the oldest Ma- son in the District of Columbia and a trustee of the church, assisted in the ceremonies, in which was used the gavel used by George Washington when the corner stone of the United States Capitol was laid. The new church building, con- structed at a cost of approximately $300,000, was designed by Norman Hulme, Philadelphia architect, and is of perpendicular English Gothic archi- tecture. Local stone finished with a hammered surface was used. The church auditorium is of the clerestory long-axis type, with a central aisle leading to a balanced sanctuary, and will seat 500 persons. The ceiling is supported on heavy oak beam trusses, with a clear height to a ridge of 38 feet. A gallery, especlally designed not to project into the auditorium, will seat 100 persons. Though the church auditorium con-' forms to traditional practice in both layout and design, the Sunday school | rooms and associated features are modern in every respect. ‘Both the first and second floors are fitted for social needs. An office for the Sunday school superintendent, a social hall equipped | with a stage and dressing rooms, kitchenettes located in convenient places, men's and women's club rooms with fireplaces, Scout quarters for both boys and girls, a dining room and a variety of class rooms are among the many attractive features of the new rx-urch buildin, % A gift of the late Mr. Lambie, an organ with 24 chimes and more than 1,200 pipes has been installed. The English close and litch gate are especially attractive and unusual fea- | tures of the building. Another interest- | ing feature is the famous bell which | | designed place of honor in the new building. Like many of the famous church bells in the United States, this old bell was cast in England. At the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1876, it was awarded a prize for its fine tonal qualities. The church building has had a oolor- history. It had its inception in prlyer meetings held in private homes in Bottom” as early as 1848. first tangible effect of these meetings was a chapel at Twenty-second and E streets. On August 22, 1854, the cor- ner stone of the old church was laid (fltlm- erutrtn GOSPEL CHAPEL’ 14th St. and Penna. Ave. S.E. Sunday School Rally at 9:45 am.
