Open to Inspect Drive out 5th or 7th St.. four squares above Kennedy to Oglethorpe RM HOOKER Met, 2663 Do you remember that years ago in old-fashioned gardens and upon estates | shrubs were planted after this fashion | —either as an individual shrub, like the lilac, underneath some convenient window of the house; or in clumps upon the lawn in round beds? These methods of planting as such are past, and people now look at shrubs as a i part of the landscaping effect of their , Whole grounds. The grounds as a whole represent a | picture and this picture is enhanced in valfie by bloom from earliest Spring { to latest Fall and then throughout the Winter by interesting fruit vessels and | evergreens. So the year sround the grounds are alive and interesting, while s ago after the early Summer pe- there was nothing about the picture. In choosing shrubs the home grounds, one chooses { them then from this point of view, that s, the point of view of interest, spectacular effect, and becoming a part of the general picture. Therefore, one would like Spring shrubs for beauty of early bloom, Summer ones for bloom and leaf structure, and Fall and Winter ones for fruit. Appropriate Shrubs, | | Al who have journeyed to Bermuda | remember that shrub called “match me if you can” with leaves so colored and s0 varied in shape that it would be very difficult to match any two leaves. |~ So let us consider what shrubs might | be- interesting for our grounds whether | they be small or large, city or country First, let us consider shrubs in re spect to bloom. One of the earliest | blooming of all is that beautiful for- sythia, or yellow bell, which appears in It 'is always lovely It may be used as a specimen shrub, that anted all by itself, and makes a lovely mass of yel- lowlike sunshine in earliest Spring. One advantage of the forsythia is that it may be left a good many years with- |out any pruning, or it may be thinned | out every third year, or cut back each | year when it is through blooming. This hrub forms very long whips through- | out the Summer which send out bloom | the following Spring. As a specimen | shrub, it had better be left unpruned | for_some time. |~ Chokeberry, ‘Aronia arbutifolia, which | has white bloom with tinges of red, | blooms from April into May, and an. other white-blooming shrub one ma: | choose for early bloom is Black Haw or Stagbush, Viburnum prunifolium. | North Side Trying. For bloom a little later In the year one may choose hawthorne (Cratae- gus) and mountain laurel. Perhaps there is a north side of the house that | needs a bank of shrubbery. The north side’ of any house is a trying side to | landscape. Mountain laurel and rhodo- | dendron banked in such places wil give fine bloom through May and June, | and with these two one may have all | ranges of color. Running into June, there is mock | orange, sweet elder and arrowwood. Fur July bloom we have the dogwoods, | sweet elder and sheep laurel. | For Fall shrubs one should choose those with interesting fruiting effects, such as Hercules' club, barberry, wax. | berry ‘and Rosa rugosa (for its rose | hips). We may also consider shrubs from another point of view, that is, whether we should use them merely in border plx_;‘:unz. or throughout the grounds. CORNER 33rd and Morrison St. Chevy Chase, D. C.
