BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. ‘Spectal Dispateh to The Star. NEW YORK, September 21—Stag- gered by the ovenight announcement that Great Britain had abandoned the gold standard the stock market first broke under a flood of selling and then rallied in amazing fashion today. The industrials came back over most of the ground lost, but the railroad shares turned against the bears spectacularly, with Reading, the feature, up at one time more than 25 points. ‘The recovery developed a bear panic in the railroad stocks in the afternoon. Reading was a spectacular feature, frantic bidding by the shorts advanc- ing the price more than 25 points. The . the merchandising and mail order shares were acutely weak and General Motors broke through the 28 mark. For United States Steel there was better support, although it sold under 75 during the first hour. From that point it rebounded 4’ points on short covering. The market was helped by the official ruling against short sales. It was also helped by the heavy cover- ing movement that got under way after the early selling had been absorbed. Stocks In which the short interest was the largest were the first to recover. A typical instance was Reading, a railroad issue which had been pressed for sale by bearish operators for \weeks past. Just before noon the ticker printed a quotation on Reading of 52 bid, offered at 78. Thereafter it sold at 54, but that was up almost 4 points on the day.
