The millions of dollars now being ex- | | pended, or to be spent in years of the immediate future, for the development | | of extensive parks, bridges, connected | systems of arterial boulevards and other il | major improvements will serve to stimu- late the expansion of Greater Washing- ton into suburban areas. ‘This thought is expressed by John A. Petty, xecreugo.ot the Washington Real Estate rd in summarizing findings of study he has just completed of population figures for the District of Columbia and the surrounding countles, as contained in volume 1 of the 1930 census report. Some of these major Capital im- provements now being carried out, or which are being planned for the near future, are the extension of Rock Creek Park, the Mount Vernon Boulevard, the Fort Drive Boulevard system, link- ing the historic sites of fortifications about the Capital, the Lincoln Memo- rial Bridge and the Potomac Palisades | driveway. | Census Totals Compared. Analyzing the latest census figures for the Greater Washington ares, as compared with totals of a decade ago, Mr. Petty states that the growth of Washington and its immediate environs is very definitely indicated by an in- crease of 100,316 in the District and the adjacent counties. “It is interesting to note,” he con- tinues, “that this increase was divided almost equally between the city of Washington 25 such and the metro- politan areas in Maryland and Viry . ‘There was an increase in the District of Columbia of 49,208, while the increase in Maryland and Virginia combined was slightly over 51,000. “The present population of metropoli- tan Washington amounting to 672,198 is | distributed as follows: District of Co- | lumbia, 486,869; Arlington County, | 26.615; Fairfax County, 25,264; Mont- | gomery County, 49.206; Prince Georges | County, 60,095, and Alexandria, 24,149. “The increase in population of the | metropolitan area during the period | from 1920 to 1930 amounting to 100,316 was divided as follows: District of Co- | lumbi 49.208; Arlington County, 10, Fairfax County, 3321; Mont- gomery County, 14.285; Prince Georges County, 16,748, and Alexandria, 6,089. } Smallest Percentage. | _‘The District of Columbia proper showed the smallest percentage of in- crease in the calculation with a figure of 113, while Arlington County re- corded 659 as the highest percentage of increase. The percentage of the other areas are shown as follows: Fair- fax County, 15.1; Montgomery County, 40.9; Prince Georges County, 38.6, and b whea.of metropolitan Washing “The area of me n Washing- ton embraced in this study comprises 1,514 square miles, divided as follows: District of Columbia, 62; Arlington County, 25; Fairfax County, 416; Mont- gomery County, 521; Prince Georges 482, and Alexandria, 8. “The concentration of population in these various areas is indicated specific- | ally in the census report which shows a density in the District of Columbia of 7,852.7 persons per square mile. The other areas are reported as follows: Arlington County, 1,064.6; Fairfax County, 60.7; Montgomery County, 94.4; Prince Georges County, 124.7, and Alex- | andria, 3,018.6.” ‘:‘REALTORS’ DATA CHANGED Periodical Reports to Replace “An- | nuals of Practice.” Realtor members of the National As- sociation of Real Estate Boards will re- ceive directly and periodically through the year timely and new data and in- formation on the various branches of the real estate business instead of the “Annals of Real Estate Practice,” pub- lished annually heretofore by the asso- ciation and distributed in ber.
