E Jake Kilrain Upholds Modern Fighters SAYS THEY BATILE HARD AS IN HIS DAY ¥2-Year-Old Thinks Sullivan and Others Would Have Shone in This Era. BY DONALD CAMERON, Associated Press Sports Writer. UINCY, Mass,, August 14— Jake Kilrain, who fought 75 rounds with John L. Sullivan 40 years ago, paused in his rounds as a night watchman at the Fore River ship- building plant to speak a good word for his successors in the ring. The T2-year-old veteram of prize fights that sometimes went 100 rounds or more is one old-timer who isn’t convinced the boxers of his day were any better than the bpya ‘who step only 10 or 15 rounds "We learned to fight under London gflu ring rules,” he said, “and all our ing was based on the conditions existing then. Rates Tunney High. “The present fighters are all right,” he said. “They're about the same as we ‘were. We went in and fought until we won or lost. These young fellows go in there and fight their heads off, t00.” Kilrain thinks Gene Tunney would have been a good fighter in any era. He also thinks Sullivan, Charley Mitchell and the other boys of his day wculd be successful today. He recalled his famous meeting with , in 1889, ch..mfilnm ip A his title and held it until Corbett de- feated him in New Orleans in 1892.
