Scenes, in the tabernacle, of = woman evangelist are produced by Frank Capra, the director, with creditable fidelity to the require- ments of such mass pictures, and, the burning of the auditorium in the midst of a crowded service makes an unusual piece of impres- sive photography. Wille the foreword of the play states that “The Miracle Woman' has a purpose, and intimates that it reveals the hollowness of an enter- prise which makes a business of appeal to the emotions, its merit ntust be appraised from the stand- point of its contribution to theatri- cal history, and in that respect it is different from the common output It reveals the transformation of tin- sel into gold, the creation of char- acter in the midst of humbug, and it has a spiritual atmosphere which outshines expert showmanship in the pulpit. It is fortunate that in the selec- tion of Miss Stanwyck, Mr. Manners and Miss Mercer for the leading roles, it has been possible to con- tribute to the sincerity of the pro- duction. The first mentioned, in particular, has been assigned one of the most difficult parts on either stage or screen, and her ability to create the vengeful evangelist with- out exaggeration, and to reveal her transformation through the influ- ence of the material with which she is working, is most artistic in its effects. Other important roles are _ played by Sam Hardy, Russell Hop. ton, Charles Middleton, Eddie Bo- land Thelma Hill and Alleen Carlyle, and, in addition to execellent photog- graphy, the sound effects are so well modulated as to contribute to the spirit_represented at the services. Keith's also offers some good short subjects. D.C.C. will become effective September 1. Asnouncing the President's approval of the promotions, including six other medical officers, Acting Secretary of the Navy Jahncke made public a letter from Mr. Hoover, dated July 17, saying the President had no interest in the imatter of the board’s selection “other e best men should K&42,S STANWYCS ML Mo ‘DIRIGIBLE Pirst Time at RKO Kelth's Popular Prices RICHARD DIX tn “Public Defender™ Evelyn Breat in “Traveling Husbands” Jahncke declined to answer questions of newspaper men as to whether the previous list did not consist of the “best men.” He became indignant when the correspondent asked whether Mr. Hoover’s rejection was not based upon the omission of Dr. Boone’s name, and sald, “No one but members of the pre- vious board and the President know whether Dr. Boone was not on the list, the deliberation having been secret and confidential.” The only other change in the previ- ous list reported to have been made by the new Selection Board was the elimi- nation of the name of Lieut. Comdr. Willlam B. Hetfield, who at the height of the Nicaraguan earthquake last March, engaged in an altercation with Nicaraguan President Moncada. Refused Admittance. Dr. Hetfield, who was directing relief operations, upon hearing that a wounded Marine sergeant was in the President’s temporary palace, went there to administer medical attention. He was met_at the door by a member of the Guardia Nacional who refused him admittance on the ground it was the President’s palace, past the Guardia, Dr. Het- flield entered the palace, where he was met by the President, who informed him he was violating the sanctity of the presidential residence and told him no Marine was there. Dr. Hetfield and President Moncada exchanged words, but the doctor insisted on looking after the Marine. Pollowing this altercation, upon the return to Nicaragua of American Min- ister Hanna, Dr. Hetfield was ordered | out of Nicaraf and assigned to duty aboard a relief ship.
