HINDA COHEN. Mrs. Hinda Cohen, 106 years old, be- lieved to have been the oldest woman resident of the District of Columbia, wes burled yesterday in Adas Israel Cemetery, Congress Heights. A T8-year-old son, Koppel Cohen of Philadelphia, came to Washington for the funeral. Mrs. Cohen also is sur- vived by two daughters, Mrs. Charles Eluto, 4723 Eighth street, and Mrs. Dora Silverman of Kenilworth, as well as about 100 other descendants of four generations. She has five great-great- grandchildren. A Russian Jewess, Mrs, Cohen came to this country 30 years ago and had since lived with her daughter, Mrs. Eluto. She was thought to be in good health until Wednesday, followed a paralytic stroke. Mrs. Cohen was in Russia at the time of the liberation of the peasantry there, which took place several years before slavery was abolished in this country. Waggaman, 85-year-old author, died last night at her home in Hammond Courts, Thirtieth and Q streets, after a short iliness, Mrs. W gaman was well known in literary cir- cles. ' She was a native of Baltimore, though she had been a resident of this city for more than 60 years. She was the widow of Samuel J. Waggaman, who died in 1913, She had been a professional writer since girlhood, and had written numer- ous serials, sHort storles and ‘Within the past 15 years she writ< ten about 35 books for children. Had Just Finished Two Books. Mrs. Waggaman was educated at Mount De Sales Convent, Catonsville, Md. She was a brilliant scholar there and her literary ability was evident at an early age. In 1923, when she was 72 years old, she was named winner of & short-story contest over 3,000 other - D!n‘.\nlplllfl ‘Two of her outstanding works were historical novels, one of which, “Carol Dare,” depicts the early history of Maryland.
