A6 MEMORIAL HONORS VIGTORY OF PERRY Keynote of Peace Features Dedication Ceremonies at Put-in-Bay. By the Assoclated Press. PUT-IN-BAY, Ohio, July 31.—The famous victory of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s American fleet over the British on Lake Erle in the War of 1812, which paved the way for the more than 8 century of peace between the two countries, was commemorated here to- day with the dedication of the Perry Victory Memorial, & granite monument 352 feet high. Although the monument memorialized an_event of war, the keynote of the dedication was one of peace. Citizens and officials of both Canada and the United States joined in the ceremany. ‘The main part of the dedication was to be broadcast over a Nation-wide chain of the National Broadcasting Co. from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m, Eastern stand- ard time. It included a message from President Hoover and the addresses of Gov. George White of Ohio and others. Victory Won in 1813, Commodore Perry’s victory was won near here September 10, 1813, in one of the most picturesque naval combats in American history. After a hard-fought battle, the British surrendered to the American fleet, whereupon Perry sent his famous laconic message to Gen. William Henry Harrison. “We have met the enemy and they are ours. Two ships, two brigs, one | schooner and one sloop.” Tre victory gave the United States surremacy on Lake Erie and com- peolied the sbandonment by the British of Detrcit; it recovered Michigan and made it possible for Gen. Harrison’s land forces to enter at once upon an mggressive campaign on the Canadian pide. The strategic advantage of the victory which hastened the end of the war, was ccompanied by a psychological effect | |l on the American people of almost equal | ff importance, for it was the first time an American fleet had met a British fleet @nd defeated it. Honors Gen. Harrison. In addition to memorializing the naval victery, the moriument, which was opened 16 years ago in an incom- lete form, also commemorated the orthwest Campaign of Gen. Harrison and the Rush-Bagot treaty which pro- wvided for the still existing disarmament on the Canadian-American frcntier. Among those who were to participate in the ceremonies besides Gov. White, were: Senators James Hamilton Lewis of TIllincis and Robert J. Bulkley of Ohio, Case R. Howard and A. W. J. Flack, representing the Canadian Club of New York, and the members of the National Perry’s Victory Memorial Commission. BUSINESS WOMEN END | WORLD LABOR PARLEY International Leaders Give Various Theories for Relieving Unemployment. By the Associated Press, VIENNA, July 31.—The International Federation of Business and Professional Wemen closed its first session yester- day after two days devoted to the dis- cussion of the amelioration of the un- employment situation and other world problems. The principal speaker on unemploy- ment was Dr. Hilda Oppenheimer of the Berlin labor ministry, who suggested voluntary international division of pro- duction might help relieve the basic causes of joblessness. The problem is also psychological, she said, for idle workmen have a feel- ing that they are “superfluous in the world” and forget how to work in course of time. Mme. Plaminkova, Czechoslovakian Senator, urged improvement of work- ing conditions, declaring women in Czech shoe factories are forced to stand on one foot eight hours a day tending a machine. Lena Madesin Phillips, American law- yer and present president of the con- gress, was unanimously re-elected. FILM ACTRESS HELD U. 8. Detains Mexican Girl on Charge of Illegal Entrance. Tentatively the debate has been set for August 29, although it is possible later changes may shift the date a few days one way or the other. Senator Harrison, who is now on ya- cation at Biloxi, Miss., promised to be close to a Columbia station on the date set, while Senator Dickinson plans to be at Station WBBM, Chicago, Harrison challenged Dicki to a ' | debate after the Towan asked icst what rates in the Hawley-Smoot bill the Mississippian thought were too high.
