By the Associated Press. » DENVER, Colo., July 20 —A murmur of surprise and conjecture which fol Jowed the opening performance of Ethel Barrymore in “The School for Scandal” here Monday had led today to publica- tion of a front-page article signed by the famous actress in which she ‘“ex- plained” what critics called the “worst performance of her eareer.” Under the headline “Ethel Barrymore Tells Own Tale of ‘Worst Perform- ance,’ ” the Star related that a curtain of darkness seemed to hover over her throughout the play. In another story, Kaspar Monahan, dramatic critic for the Rocky Mountain News, whose review was the most char- jtable of those published here, quoted |y prominent Denver first nighters on their reaction to the performance, in which Miss Barrymore frequently forgot or mumbled her lines. Censured arfdl Admired. Admiration for the actress for carry- _ing on under obvious difficulty was ex- pressed by some. Others censured her and one suggested that his money be refunded. Miss Barrymore, who played to a cked house again last night, said in E:r signed article “I was in a dasge, but at the time I thought I could carry on through the play. Even-at the conclu- gion I did not realize there was anything the matter. “No, I am certain that nothing I ate or drank previous to the performance was responsible for my dazed condi- il “There was the long, hard trip from New York and the terrible heat, then the strain of rehearsal and arranging the sets hecre, the high altitude com- bined with the hot weather and an ac- cident during rehearsal that made me €0 lame I could hardly walk. By the Associated Press. MEXICO CITY, July 29.—Fifteen refugee priests from the state of Vera Cruz had arrived in Mexico City yester- day, bringing various accounts of the situation in their home state. Among the arrivals was Father Rosas, | who escaped death in the shooting in Asuneion church in the city of Vera| Cruz_Saturday, was killed. He sald no priests were left in the Lity of Vera Cruz or in Jalapa, the state capital, and almost all the clergy in the larger towns had fled from the state or been expelled under the new law limiting the priests in the state to 13. He said he believed there still were some priests in hiding within the state, but Bishop Guisar’s secretary said there was no contact with these priests as they had to stay in hiding. Jalapa dispatches reported the death of the young man who shot Gov. Adalberto Tejeda last Saturday and who was wounded by friends of the governor. Law Is Threatened. Special Dispatch to The Star. FALLS CHURCH, Va, July 20— Mayor L. P. Daniel, who has been away at the Reserve officers’ training camp at Fort Humphreys the past week, in- spected the premises in the rear of R. L. Makeley's garage where Falls Church's now famols bears have been confined for several years and where the sole survivor is still incarcerated. He stated that he notified the attendant who is taking: care of the bear in the absence of MeXkeley that the present unsani- tary conditions there must be improved immediately. Daniel stated that the Town Council has not yet decided what action should be taken to have the bear remcved from the town and to insure that no one else will keep dangerous pets in confinement. Arlington County's game warden is making an investigation of the State law to see whether there is any regulation covering such cases. Daniel stated that he understands Makeley will co-operate when he re- turns and will voluntarily place the bear & 300 or other suitable place of captivity.
