CHAPTER XVIIL GABREAU'S ERRAND. HEN GABREAU came down stairs, Conchita was washing the dishes after a late break- fast, having waited on Molly and Divitt herself. “I tell dem you are not well.” she crooned. “I think they will not send you on errands mebbe today.” That suitéd Gabreau very well. He would not eat breakfast, but drank some coffee. Then he went out into Rondeau street, passing along Royal, far as Gabreau had observed, but he could believe any discrepance of Led- better. The box also was Jocked. Ga- breau with a smile dropped it into the satchel, put in the bottler with wkich he had come. His eye fell on the painting st the bed’s foot—the painting he seemed to see in the dark. He mounted a chair, drew the dirk from his belt. He would slash the thing to ribbons. Gabreau drew back his hand, a sound in his throat. The flesh was too beautiful. ‘The dark eyes looked at him. He pulled the chair away, took his satchel. Quickly he went through the outer door and down the stair. Conchita was awake and watching, for he was late. He made no reply to her eager murmur, but fi:;’g the bag into the closet, undressed and got into bed. It was not until later in the day, when she was alone, that Conchita got out the bag and opened it. It contained empty bottles and a carved wooden box that had been opened and snapped to- gether again—jaggedly, as if in fury. ‘There were only some papers in the box, small ivory-colored papers that she could not read. “Dat diablo, Umberto,” she growled. entering the shop where he had taken | “He treat my Gabreau mo' wuss ever’ the picture to be framed. Plerre put down a cup of black coffee as Gabreau entered from the narrow street. But the dwarf. so intent upon his errand, only nodded at the chéerful greeting from Pierre. Pierre had many things in his shop besides frames. There were old carved 'sofas and chairs, vases and lamps and clocks, bracelets and brooches and rings whose histories went back for centuries —hundreds of things that could be bought for a song. Gabreau had paused before a case of old weapons, curious relics. some with corroded blades and gems in the hilts Pierre came over to him, pointing out the beauties of an old scimitar. Its thin steel curve was iridescent through the rust. Plerre's face reflected his enthusiasm over it—but evidently Gabreau was not interested. But Gabreau knew what he had come to buy—the dirk with the smooth, sharp blade and the handle that fitted snugly into the hand. Plerre nodded, taking if from the case. “Tell yo' mistress,” he said 1 have anudder ‘table like de lit' rosewood one ;lhe buy. I be please she come and see im.” Gabreau took his parcel, flung the price and went out. “Now you be keerful, bebby!" chita crooned that night. “You not eat, you have not slip. You down Con- hdve have You mus’ let him ¢o de work. You let him tek de chances.” Gabreau heard. When Conchita had gone downstairs he removed the dirk from its place bchind the framed pic- ture and thrust it in his belt. From the armoire he took an old black satchel, placed a wrapped parcel within it and went down the stair. » He knew where Ledbetter lived—in the great bachelor apartments. In the days before Molly had turned the dive into the Parlors he had carried certain parcels to this house—parcels similar to the one he carried now. The bottles in this parcel were empty, but they would serve. The doorman would not doubt remember him. People always remem- bered him. Gabreau, arriving at the apartment, was told that Mr. Ledbetter was not in. ‘He will be in later?” Gabreau said. ‘The doorman did not dispute this. He appeared to divine the nature of Ga- breau's errand. Said to the elevator boy, “Take this up and put it in Mr. Ledbetter’s apartment.” But Gabreau would not surrender his satchel. The doorman signaled him to go up with it. ‘The elevator boy knocked at Ledbet- ter's rooms. and presently unlocked the door, switched on the light, waiting while Gabreau went in and set a bottle on the table. “I've got tek one on he next flo.” said Gabreau, his hand on the latch of the door. He himself turned off the light. closed the door. He came into the hall. .*I walk down.” he said. The elevator beil was ringing and the boy left him. Gabreau started up the stair, came down, walked back to Ledbetter's door. | 10 opened at his touch. He released the latch again, went in and closed the door, turned on the soft light of a sin- gle sconce. He had never seen such a place. Richness of walls and hangings. of jamps and paintings, divans and deep chairs. Gabreau stole across the rugs, opened the door upon a bed room with canopied bed and mirrored bath beyond. Opposite the bed bung a painting— Venus reclining amid velvet. Gabreau could see the white body dimly by the light from the adjoining room. Above it was a shaded globe. Gabreau pressed a button. The light came on. Voluptuously beautiful, languorous dark eyes—eves as dark as those of his Madonna. Did this man think? he bought this as he—Gabreau—had bought the Madonna? Gabreau caught sight of himself in one of the mirrors. He twisted away from the livid reflection. starting sharply at a sound from the hall. Quickly he turned off the sconce and the light above the picture. He waited in the dark of the bed room while the big clock on the mantel struck 10. “He had hoped that he would find Led- better at home and alone; that. seeing the satchel and thinking its contents a Rift, Ledbetter would admit him and close the door. It had been too much to hope for. ‘Things didn't happen that way with him—Gabreau. But he could wait. He was used to waiting. ‘The sound died down the hall. Ga- breau brought a chair into the recess behind the door and sat down. Let- better had gone to some festivity: he would. be late now. Perhaps he would not be home till 2 or 3 o'clock. ‘The thought made Gabreau nervous. At 11 he began to pace the rooms. Once he laid down on the bed, but even in | the dark he could see the white outline of the recumbent Venus. feel her dark eves. He went back to his chair behind the door. ‘Two o'clock came: 3. Gabreau sat very still until the dawn began to gray the windows, to sift into the room, till time.” (To be continued.) HARVARD BOASTS LATIN STANDING Remains Only School Relquir- ing Its Study for Degree in Classics. Special Dispatch to The Star. BOSTON, July 27 (N.ANA).—“To the confusion of the enemies of the classics!” It is a gray professor who proposes the toast, but there are 40 pink-cheeked Harvard undergraduates who leap up with a shout to drink it down. It de- tracts nowise from the zest of their toast that it comes to cap a ballad of derision of Yale's Latinless degree. “I'd value more a load of bungholes,” the professor declaims to student de- iight, “than a pale A. B. degree—a Lat- inless degree.” Alone in Requirement. So. chuckliug at Yale, which follows Princeton in sacking the classical re- quirements, the Classical Club of Har- vard lingers over the toasts of its an- nual banquet in gay mood. The rich red wine of the classics still courses at Harvard. She stands alone now. of the great American colleges, in the classical requirement. Exultant professors in the classical department have dug up statistics to show that twice as many students at Harvard are' concentrating on Greek and Latin studies as 10 years ago. To be sure, the number makes no great total, but thev have to have five sec- tions for advanced Latin for freshmen where there were only three. This trend at Harvard owes its in- terest to the fact that it sets dead against the prevailing current of the times that elsewhere scems to be car- rying the classical studies that were the fundamentals of learning in grand- {at}gr's day farther and farther into imbo. Best Literature Is Reason. What's the reason? “The best literature and the best ideas,” Prof. Milan Parry states blandly when the committee of tutors was lasked why an increasing number of Harvard students, prefer Latin and Greck. : It was Prof. Parry who acted as toastmaster at a recent Classical Club banquet, and the students who cheered the confusion of the cnemies of the classics—at Yale—talked _better than the run of college men. Apparently Ledbet- ter possessed no treasures—no treasures except the things that were on the walls, about the rooms. Gabreau's eye fell on a Nabian dancing girl in black marble, a slim ‘Tanagra vase. These were precious, he knew, but he could not take them away. He might smash them in little bits to strew the floor. The vase sat on a desk in the shadows by the bed—an old escritoire with drawers. Gabreau went over to it. ‘The drawers were locked. Gabreau laughed, drew a ring of keys from his ket. There was none that fitted the but Gabreau’s hands were strong. ‘A key turned relentlessly in his grip. ‘The lock broke.
