Thomas Grant, 55 years old, secretary to Secretary of: War Alger in McKin- ley's administrations, as well as former secretary of the Washington Chamber of Commerce, died yesterday in Emer- gency Hospital after an illness of sev- eral months. Born near St. Paul, Minn., Mr. Grant came to Washington in his early youth. He attended Business High Sctool and was a graduate of Georgetown Univer- sity Law School, He served s secre- tary to Alger while the latter was in the McKinley cabinet and also when Senator from Michigan, and as secre- tary of"the local Chamber of Com- merce for more than 11 years. Mr. Grant was also secretary of the Build- ing Trade Employes’ Associatior. and the Master Bullders’ Association, but | was forced to give up the positions, due | to 1ll health, six months ago. Mr. Grant lived at 1706 Kilbourne street, was well known in business and social circles here, and was a member of | the National Press Club. He took an | active part in Masonic and Shrine ac- tivities, holding membership in Almas Temple and a number of other fra- ternal organizations. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Susan Matthew Grant; a son, Thomas Grant, jr., and a brother, James Grant. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. MARINE EXECUTIVE DIES John H. Thomas Passes Away at New York After Long Illness. NEW YORK, May 18 ().—John H. Thomas, 62, vice president of the In- ternational Mercantile Marine and di- rector of the Port of New York during the war when he supervised supply ships, died last night after a long illness. He is survived by his widow, the for- mer Margaret Hale, and a daughter, Miss Anne P. Thomas. Justin McGrath, director of the Na tional Catholic Welfare Conference News Service and representative of the Hearst newspapers at the Peace Con- ference in Paris in 1919, died at Clif- ton Springs Sanitarium, Clifton Springs, N. Y., yesterday. He was 64 years old. Since 1920 Mr. McGrath had been director of foreign and domestic news and features of Catholic papers for the National Catholic Welfare Council, with headquarters in Washington. He lived at 1320 Emerson street. He was ad- mitted to the sanitarium only the day before his death as an dngina pectoris patient. Mr. McGrath was 2 newspaper man of almost 50 years’ experience. He was born in St. Louis and educated at St. Louis University. He began his career as a reporter on the St. Louis Post-D: patch and later became its city editor. Later he served as Washington corre spondent for the St. Louis Globe-Demo- crat and Albany correspondent and editorial writer for the New York Times. Later he went to the New York American, on which paper he rose to the position of city edit: nd later, managing editor. He also had been managing editor of the San Francisco Examiner. In 1914 he became chief of the Uni- versal Service Bureau iy Washington, and at the close of the war went to Paris to “cover” the peace confercnce for “all Hearst pap After the conference he returned to W vith the Hearst organ , and in 1920 he took over the t. { organiz- ing the news service of which he has been director ever since.
