9 FL00D NARKER SBENGHOVED Sandstone Post to Make Way for Constitution Avenue Widening. A famous pld weather-scarred land- mark of Washington, upon which the ; chiseled record of the high-water mark | of the famous fizod of 1889 is fast dis- appearing, is being moved fromp its old foundations to make way for the widen- ing of Constitution avenue. It is an old sandst:ne post, of orna- mental design, located on the southwest corner of the interszction of Fifteenth street and itution. avenue, near the new Department of Commerce Building. % ‘The old p:st, marking the entrance to the Mall, is one of three on the in- tersection. Two of these posts have chiseled marks shcwing the height of the water during the famous flood, but the other post, on the southeast corner of the intersection, is a fake. It is bullt’ of bricks and covered over with cement to imitate the genuine sandstone mArkers on the northwest and the southwest corners. The fake post is to be destroyed. There is no similar post on the northeast corner cf the in- tersection. 1 Will Be Moved 25 Feet, ‘The old post being moved is on the southwest corner, and is being trans- ferred to a place absut 25 feet due south of its present site, in order to make way for the wider Constitution avenue. ‘The sandstone is weathering away on this old marker, part of the date of the famous flzod being missing. The sign now reads, “High Water Mark, June 2,” but the place where 1889 was has weathered away. On the other marker on the north- ‘west corner part of the surface of the stone has weathered away, but it is barely possible to read the same date, June 2, 1889. ‘Other high-water marks are also reg- the old post, but parts of these are also obliterated.- The top mark, 1889, is 10 inches above the high- water mark for the flood of February 2, 1881, and 3 feet 6 inches above the mark of November 26, 1877. Mcving of the old high-water mark sandstone post recalled today the tre- mendous damage done during the record-breaking flood of 1839 when the Potomac overficwed, and inundated the town river front and.the entire section south of Pennsylvania avenue. Follows Johnstown Flood. ‘The rising of the river began one da; after the devastating Johnstown flood’, ‘whenthe dam of the Conemaugh Lake gave way, releasing a torrent of angry ‘waters that swept down the valley, lu;eln( death 2nd destruction in its wake. In the southeast and southwest sec- tions ths water splashed against door- steps. Pennsylvania avenue presented a picturesque scene. The water had risen to the height of the platforms of the street cars. From Saturday afterncon until late the N-‘umu Capital FIGHT ON \;IILL LIKELY YONKERS, N. THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C. MONDAY, MAY 18. 193L U.3. T0 MOTORIZE PART OF CAVALRY = Tanks Will Replace 8,000 Horses Under Plans An- nounced by MacArthur. By the Assoctated Press. Speedy man-made tanks are going to replace about 8,000 horses in a°’part of the United States’ Cavalry. { ‘When Gen. Douglas MacArthur, chief | of Army staff, yesterday announced his meehanization program for the Cavalry, he said this step was being undertaken in an effort to modernize that branch of the defensive forces. Ten years of study, based on lessons learned in the World War, he said, have established the superiority of tanks and their greater strategic mobil- ity for some functions. But there are | some things the horse can do that the | tank cannot, so the four-legged beasts | of burden will be retained folthat duty. ‘There is a natural public conception, the horse as a weapon, and as a means of transportation he has be- come, next to the dismounted man, the slowest means of tion. In portation, nish the best mobility, ai tion is properly borne in mind in all our plans.” The mechanization , 88 now planned, will extend over several years.
