REAL MEETING TO HONOR JUDGE H. W. SMITH Local Realtors May 21. Nelson to Speak. Judge Howard W. Smith of Alexan- dria, Representative-elect eighth congressional district of Virginia, will be guest of honor and Herbert U. Nelson, executive secretary of the Na- tional Association of Real Estate Boards, principal speaker at an lnnlverug meeting of the local realtor board be_held May 21. 1 The meeting, announced today by Arthur Carr, president of the Washing- ton Real Estate Board, will be in the nature of a celebration of the tenth anniversary of the reorganization of the former Real Estate Brokers' Association on May 21, 1921. In addition to a business session, there will be a spectal entertainment program, followed by a buffet supper. Membership Increases. Since the organization of the present board, Mr. Carr stated today, there has been a gradual increase in membership each year and the board has progressed in the development of specific services to its members and the public. Mr. Carr listed as some of the more dmportant activities of the board the development and adoption of a code of ethics and standard business contract forms used in real estate practice, in- auguration of a system of arbitration between members in cases of misunder- | PO’ standings, maintenance of statistics re- garding property ownership, zoning, umrnengs and real estate transfers and mortgages. Service Bureau Operated. One of the principal services offered to the public by the board, he said, was the operation of a free service bureau which undertakes to render assistance to those seeking advice l&d information regarding real estate problems. "‘The %Vsshinmn Real Estate Board has been actively interested in the study end development of laws pertaining to real estate and has co-operated with the National Capital Park and Planning Commission and the Zoning Commis- sion in working out practical probleml" arising in the growth of Washington, he said. Other activities of the board have fncluded the fostering of courses in real estate study, conducting forum discus- sions and the maintaining of a real estate library as a part of an educa- tional program for realtors and pro- spective members of the board. ZONING CERTIFICATES AVAILABLE T0 PUBLIC Information on Specific Properties Will Be Supplied Upon ‘Written Request. Official zoning certificates are avail- able at the District Building to realtors and the public generally, giving owners and prospective owners of property here accurate statement of zoning restrictions on specified properties, the Washington Real Estate Board states in the current issue of its official organ, the Washing- ton Realtor. Upon _written request the District Zoning Commission will issue an official certificate of zoning, giv! complete and accurate facts pel g to any specific property in respect to zoning regula’ ns, the board announces. Memoers of the realtor board were urged in the publication to take advan- tage of this service in making sales, particularly in cases where the question of zoning is an important factor in the transaction. The certificates, the board states, will show, at the time of the transaction, just what uses to which the property may be put, as well as the zoning limi- tations in respect to improvements. Use of this information, the board de- | clares, will tend to avold misunder- standings which sometimes occur when the subject of zoning is not given proper attention. BUILDERS URGED - TO ASSERT VISION| A challenge to the construction in- dustry to assert natural and needed leadership in the present difficult peri- od was given by Truman 8. Morgan, president F. W. Dodge Corporation, at a dinner meeting of the Associated General Contractors of America last night. Mr_ Morgan is American vi president of the International Fede: tion of Building and Public Works Con- tractors. “One out of every ten workers is di- rectly or indirectly on the construction industry pay roll in normal times,” he said. “The rise and fall of activities in the construction world affect at least one-quarter of our people. It was to our industry that President Hoover and his advisers turned immediately follow- ing the collapse of the industrial boom in 1929, “It is in our direction that indus- trialists and economists lcok now as the harbinger of better days. Let us ac- cept the challenge. Let vision and leadership come forward and relegate to the limbo of the dark ages such un- employment and depression as we now experience.” 6505 Conn.
