FINANCIALE.' OLANDUTILTIES |[NEW YORK CURB MARKE ARE WEAK ON CURB Share Prices Generally Are i Irregular on Today’s Ex- {44« change Session. BY JOHN A. CRONI “®pecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, May 6.—International Utilitles and’ Standard Oll Shares were the weakest spots in today's irregular curb exchange session. Electric Bond & Share dipped about & point and American & Foreign Power was off nearly that much. Cities Service was dull and a shade lower. American Gas & Electric rose more than a point. Vacuum and Humble Oil in the Standard oil classification, Brazilian Traction, General Electric, Ltd., and Shawinigan Water in the international utilities, and Newmont Mining in the coppers were outstandingly weak in forenoon trading. Halving of the Vacuum Oil quarterly common dividend, when many . holders believed that as a result of business in the first quarter the lar rate would be maintained, unsettled the entire standard group. Vacuum in the first two hours sold down to 35%, off 3% points and at its lowest quotation since 1919, Humble Oil on a trifling decline hit a new low. Oreole Petroleum, which has just completed arrangements with other operators for unit exploration in Venesuela, lik@wise crashed into new now territory. Although ‘weekly steel trade reviews spoke encouragingly of pipe line pros- pects and even mentioned some orders being awarded to A. O. Smith & Co. that stock eased and was followed downward by Dresser Manufacturing A and B shares. Commenting on reports of probable financing, American Gas & Electric let it be known that it has more than $22,000,000 cash and more than $70,- 000,000 of subsidiary preferred stocl and bonds in its treasury at prices well under present market levels and there- fore could meet any fund demands for expansion without public financing. The break in Newmont Mining came after the trade conceded that consid- erable red metal had changed hands around the 9-cent level, the lowest quo- tation in 35 years. Some of the h-grade ut.flllg pre- nty ‘Thighs. however, was not followed by the ji securities of holding companies nor of investment trusts speclalizing in public + - utilities. American ‘Cyanamid B at times was down almost a point despite the an- Tiouncement that a new joint luhldlm plans a $10,000, of its warrants pro- of new stock on 1, 1940, at $9 a share. CHICAGO, May 6.—Western railways mn their joint fight in Federal court y against a new grain rate scale on June 1 that they protest would trim $21,500,000 from their annual earnings. Attorneys for 15 trunk lines and some 57 subsidiaries presented argu- ments in behalf of their petition for temporary injunction restraining the Interstate Commerce Commission from making the rates effective. CHICAGO GRAIN MARKETS. CHICAGO, May 6 (#).—Strength de- veloped in the corn market late today and prices advanced sharply despite relative weakness of other cereals. Rainy weather and low temperatures, making conditions unfavorable for corn planting, were largely responsible. Offer- ings of corn for May delivery were especially scarce and May quotations jumped more than 2 cents a bushel. Eastern interests trying to purchase corn available for immediate use found that the grain was tightly held. Corn closed buoyant, 1 to 214 higher at the day's top level; wheat unchanged to % up, oats % to 7 advance and provisions unchanged to a rise of 5. Close. First, the need of things; second, the | desire for things. What's the difference between these two impulses? ‘When people need things they asually buy irrespective of economic conditions, provided they have the price or the credit. When people desire things, they usually satisfy these desires only in pe- riods of prosperity and full employment. WiIl prosperity come again? Yes; it's on its way now.
