COUNTING STARTS IN'BRITISH CENSUS Ten Per Cent Increase Over 1921 Population Total Is Expectation. By the Associated Press. LONDON, April 27.—Forty thoussnd | [ started this morning| throughout Great Britain and North Ireland to collect census papers, filled | enumerators out by residents, which were expected to reveal a population of about 46,000.- 000, an increase of about 4,000,000 over the 1921 figure. Counting of the census papers will occupy probably two months, but an- swers to many of the questions on them will not be tabulated and available for statistical work until along in 1933. ‘The usual mishaps and humorous incidents accompanying taking of the census multiplied early. A constd s@le number of people had not received the census blanks, but thousands of these omissions were repaired at the last moment by police, the post offices, newspapers and other helpers. Police had difficulty in some instances in collecting information, the vagrants of London and other big citles occa- sionally refusing information which the police were not empowered to make them give. Cockney humor cropped out occasionally when some homeless down- and-outer was asked who was the head of his household—the first blank space on the census papers. Some refused to answer questions on religious grounds. ‘There were some notable absentees from the national roll call—for in- stance, the Prince of Wales and Prince George, who are returning from South America; the Duke of Connaught, the Archbishop of Canterbury and Sir James Jeans. But some noted foreign visitors were caught in the dragnet. These included Alfonso of Spain, Prince Axel of Denmark, Capt. Frank Hawks and Douglas Fairbanks, who arrived in London from India. - e For attracting the attention of the owner to a sheep which was caught in a barbed wire on Horsey Island, Eng- land, Susie, a dog, has just been pre- sented a National Canine Defense League medal.
