Resources as of this day when deposits ‘were the.largest in the history of the city, were $12,840,000 ahead of those 0!. December 3|, previous call date, and | $23,865,000 in advance of those of 40| banks on the call date of March 27, 1930. Resources of the 12 national banks of the city were $190,689,000; of the 22 savings banks, $47.673.000, and ‘of the five trust companies, $103,195,000. Bank Plans Expansion. 2 president of the International Exchange Bank, at Fifth | and H streets northwest, announced today that he plans to put on a drive starting May 1 to increase the bank’s ts above the $1,000,000 mark. In rior of the bank has been remodeled and redecorated and considerably more space provided for the addition of new departments, and for those which have ‘been _lon| in operation. ' President Schiavone also plans to increase the personnel. 7 The International ~Exchange Bank | ‘was founded by Mr. Schiavone in 1921. During the first five years he got de- posits mp to the million mark and then resigned to take up other busipess. He has recently taken the helm again and is very enthusiastic over the outlook. While he counts a good deal on the bank’s foreign connections, yet he says he- bases most of his expectations for| expansion on the development of busi- ness in the District of Columbia. Pernando Cunniberti, chairman o} the board, today added his indorsement | to the present program. “In the first month after Mr. Schiavone’s return to the bank,” he said, “we gained more new accounts than we had for any pre- vious two months during the past year. ‘While the new business campaign is not due to get fully under way until May 1 we are feeling the results of Mr. Bchiavone's work.” Business Here Appears Better. Comparisons of business being done by the Chesapeake & Potomac telephone companies with the Bell system as a whole indicate that the territory is mak- ing better progress during the depres- sion than are most other sections of the country. President Gifford, in his Teport yes- terday, announced a net loss of 38,000 | telephones in the first quarter. In the same period the Chesapeake & Potomac | companies, which operate in Washing- | ton. Maryland, Virginia and West Vir- ginia, reported a gain of 7,124 tele- phones. of which 2,449 were in this city. President Gifford reported that for the system as a whole there was a gain in March of 2,500 teléphones, In the territory covered by the four Chesapeake & Potomac telephone companies there was a gain in March of 3064 phones. 841 of which were in Washington. While the number of new telephones may not be much of a barometer of business, vet the above figures are de- cidedly interesting, to say the least Today's Trading on Exchange. STOCKS DEPRESSED IN SHARP SELLING All Sections of List Affected by Unfavorable Trade News. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES, Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, April 15.—Discouraged by the tenor of advices from the steel trade, stocks had a fresh sinking spell in today's market under a combination of liquidation and professional short selling. Both industrials and rails were affected, although the greater activity was in the former group. United States Steel made a new low in the first hour of business. The stock sold at the lowest for the bear market and brought offerings into the general industrial list for the market still looks to steel for leadership. The trade re- views told about a further reduction in the rate of steel operation, with the general average only slightly. about 50 per cent, and of an unsatisfactory price situation, with the only favorable item the demand for structural steel, Vanadium Dividend Omitted. Announcement was made that the Vanadium directors had omitted the dividend. ‘The stock had been weak all morning and sold off further when the news came out. Pressure continied to be exerted against electrical manufacturing stocks. Westinghouse Electric broke into new low ground on professed doubt as to the safety of the dividend, even on its present reduced basis. General Electric dropped to a new low on the movement Bethlehem Steel weakened and so did Allied Chemical, American Can and & long list of active issues. Air Reduc- tion made a new low early in the day. The automobile stocks came down be- cause of statements in the steel journals that demand from the manufacturers for steel products was disappointing. Losses were not large in the group, but General Motors and Chrysler were down a point or so. - Railroad stocks worked irregularly lower. Special weakness appeared in St. Louis-San Francisco and in South- ern Raflway, both at new minimum prices for the year, as were Canadian Railway pre- ferred stocks slipped off easily, notably Missouri-Kansas-Texas preferfed. Louis- ville & Nashville come down to within a point or so of its previous low. Earnings Reports Due. earnings statement for the to appear within a few days while the comparison with the same month a year ago will not be quite as unfavorable as was the case with the Pebruary reports, it is not likely to bring suppdrt to railroad stocks The weekly statement of car loadings revealed a lower total than the pre- ceding week, but some decline is sea- sonal at this time. There was no improvement in the oil group, although there was no import- nt liquidation either. Royal Dutch was one of the stocks that made a new year low. The oil shares have still to face first quarter reports from those companies that make them and a num- ber of important annual reports, among them that of Standard Oil of New Meanwhile another cut in crude is predicted, so that under the circumstances the heaviness was not surprising. Amusements were weak March | again and for the first time in a long while the food stocks were easier, in- cluding corn products, Renewed weakness in United States Steel, which dropped to a new low at 13473, caused the early market to touch new low levels on the movement. After the first half hour there was ! a small rally, which, however, left the list still Jower on the day and the Steel group failed to rally at all in early trad- ing. Bethlehem and Vanadium also droped off. Steel activity was reported down and other statistical factors were unfavorable.
