All the garden paths are winding. A path from the house enters the garden by a broad flight of steps and meanders sround to the far end, where, under the shade of a great maple, with a fountain nearby, is an open space ! where the family sometimes dines as in the old 'garden. Starting from the resting place under the maple the paths curve around the hill to the steps that lead up to the apple tree garden. The entrances to these terraces pro- vided a fitting place for the large pot- tery jars which Mr. Morrow brought back from Mexico. No one had known what to do with these large jars, of Morrow was particularly fond. There were eight of them, pleas- which harmonized with the stone walls. ‘The suggestion to use them at the ter- race entrances met, with immediate approval. In the best American designs leration is given to the autiful as well as the practical, but construction never 1is sacrificed for architectural effect, nor is mere ap- pearance allowed to take the place of convenience. Not a little of the success of well planned American houses is due to the clear-sightedness of American house- keepers, women skilled in managing the machinery of the house so that it runs easily, smoothly and with least effort. The shortening of steps, the con- venient arrangement of cupboards and closets, the elimination of much that is unnecessary, and the incorpora- tion of everything needful are largely through the efforts of these women. Most architects are glad to acknowl- edge their indebtedness to their woman clients.
