Special services beginning tomorrow and Jasting through the week will sig- nalize the twenty-fifth anniversary of the National Baptist Memorial, for- merly Immanuel Baptist Church. The first officers were: Moderator, Percy S. Foster; clerk, Reuben L. Iisley; treas- urer, Charles Werner; deacons, Percy B. Foster and Robert T. Maffett. Fifty- five members were received. The pul- pit_was supplied for a while by Rev. J. B. Clayton, after which Rev. George E. Whitehouse became the first pastor. ‘Thereafter Rev. Hermon S. Pinkham was pastor_for a number of years. In the Fall of 1914 the present pas- tor, Rev, Gove G. Johnson, was ealled to the church. He was largely instrumental in the erection of the ‘pational icc by the Northern and Southern Conventions. The Southern Convention in 1920 in session here ded- fcated the site and President Harding broke id in 1921, Secretary of State Hughes laid the corner stone in 1922 and the following year the church was cleared of “debt.
