B—12 THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., MONDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1931 TENPERANCE BODY | LAUNGHES ATACK Mrs. Willebrandt Charged With Action for Grape Concentrate Makers. Naming Mrs. Mabel Walker Wille- brandt, former Assistant Attorney Gen- ersl in charge of prohibition, as active in behalf of interests manufacturing grape concentrates fermentable into wine, the Methodist Episcopal Board of Temperance has launched a joint attack upon the grape concentrate and cigarette manufacturers. In its weekly Clip-Sheet the board urged the amendment of section 29 of the Volstead act, pertaining to the manufacture of fruit juices for home consumption. Cigarettes Are Condemned. Another editorial condemned the ereation of an “impression that the use of cigareites by young women is soclally necessary.” and the testimony “bought” from physicians and others concerning the effects of tobacco. The board contended much of the 600,000,000 increase in cigarette sales in 1930 was due to increased smoking by girls. It argued that “if alcohol in the blood of the mother reaches the unborn child * * * certainly nicotine in the blood of the mother will reach and poison her unborn babe in the same way.” In its leading editorial the board said that for two years it had been “gravely concerned” over the development of an industry for supplying “home wine ma- terials.” It singled out specifically Fruit Industries, Ltd., saying this Cali- fornia concern had been loaned ap- proximately $20,000,000 by the Farm Board. Protective Law Suggested. “Mrs. Mabel Walker Willebrandt, their attorney, has been very active,’ the editorial said, “in advocating that the Government maintain a uniformly benevolent _attitude toward the_trade in view of the fact that the United States practically holds a mortgage upon it.” It was suggested that a law be en- acted requiring fruit juices for home consumption, to be preserved in such a way as to prevent fermentation. The editorial concluded that the American people would not be content to allow California grape interests to enjoy & “monopoly founded upon a violence to the United States Constitution.” POLITICAL REFUGEE ASKS TO ENTER U.
