PARIS, February ' 11.—Republican France is approaching the day of its presidential election, May 13, with none of the furore which attends a presiden- tial election day in the United States. Indeed, up until a week or so before the event itself it is doubtful if the “campaign” for election will gain more than an occasional headline in the French newspapers. At the distance of slightly more than three months, two_principal possible candidates appear—Paul Doumer, presi- dent of the Senate, & staunch old Re- publican who lost four sons in the World War, and Aristide Briand, foreign minister of many French cabinets and occasional premier. No Campaigning Done. In view of M. Briand's avowed cam- l\q‘n to further internationalism and ehe cause of world peace many doubt that he will allow his name to go up for consideration, since in the office of further effort with the League of Na- tions, and in the cause of disarmament. Other names are mentioned as possi- ble designees for the office, but they are in the nature of dark horses and in the past no dark horses have ever peen elected.
