* RELATIVITY HALED | AS 4TH GREAT STEP Einstein Co-operator Traces; Land Marks of Science Since Copernicus. By the Assoclated Pre: PASADENA, Calif, January 20— Pour great landmarks of science, with Albert Einstein pictured as the leader of the fourth step, are set forth by Prof. Albert St. John, veteran astrono- mer at Mount Wilson Laboratory. With Einstein smiling at_his side, Prof. St. John Explained the special theory of relativity last night at thel! University Club here, St. John said: “Landmarks in the fleld of science, marking our progress through the ages, are: | Copernican System First Landmark, “First—The Copernican system that accounts for the complicated motions | of the planets as seen from the earth. | “Second—The Newtonian law of | gravitation that placed the physical | world under the reign of a universal | w. “Third—The theory of evolution by | Darwin and Wallace by which we trace our descent. “Fourth—And such a landmark is the theqry of relativity, but whence it will lead no man knoweth. “The ptolemaic system ruling thought was_overthrown by the | ars. ‘Out of these 8 min- utes’ said Kepler, ‘we will construct @ new theory that will explain the mo- tions of all planets.’ was done by Newton. “As Tycho's 8 minutes of the arc of | Mars, in_the hands of Copernicus, Kep- ler and Newton, revolutionized the age- old medieval ~conceptions. so the 43| minutes of anomaly of mercury in the hands of Einstein have revolutionized the conception of Newton.” St. John told how for 100 years the Newtonian theory was accepted as ex- ining the orbits of planets and how verrier called attention to the fact that the planet Mercury was not obey= ing Newton's law. Einstein Explains Mercury Error. For another 100 years, said St. John, astronomers were puzzled at this, until Einstein pronounced his special theory THE EVENING TAR, WASHINGTON, ICITIZENS HEAR Though only 45 inches tall, Charley Lockhart was elected guardian of the millions of dollars in securities and monies in the Texas Treasury. It was Prof. St. John at Mount Wil son Observatory who established one of the astronomical proofs of the theory of relativity. One of Einstein's chief desires in coming to California was to confer with St. John and Dr. Walter 8. Adams, director of the Mount Wil- son Observatory, who established an- other proof.
