Banding is not an excuse for indiscriminate nest hunting or ksppmf of birds by children, or others, as the work only be done under special permit, and only rrvperly qualified persons are licensed. There are 500 now operating banding stations in the country. TARZAN AND THE GOLDEN LION. They receive no pay from Uncle Sam. The ma= jority of station operators are concerned with the smaller birds that are readily attracted to home- mnde backyard traps. A “Manual for Bird Band- is issued by the Department of Agriculture, nnd in it are defailed instructions on how to build the different styles of traps for the different species of birds; advice on how to handle birds without harming them; how to place bands on their legs, and what records are required to be kept and re- ported to the central agency at Washington. This last is all 1m?ortlnt. for it is only by the study and correlation of a mass of data from many scattered points that the subject of bird migration and dis- Lrlbution can be satisfactorily treated. Thousands of new birds are captured, marked with a num- bered band, and immediately freed agaic. each year. Other thousands, already bearers of numbered tags, which in many cases were attached months or years earlier at some distant station, are also captured. A complete record is made of each bird, by number, every time it is trapped anywhere in America, lnd all records are reported m ‘Washington. He was completely fur therefore greatly exercised at the plot he had heard' iaaiudng: wltn discussed which was aimed at the life of the great Hearing, he learned the cause of their excitement. For much that they had spoken was in the language of the great apes, which Manu, the little monkey, understood perfectly.
