* RUM CAR ACCIDENT MAY PROVE FATAL Colored Driver of Car Hurt in Chase—Police Get 132 Gallons. juries which physicians predicted W‘l’l’l’d prove fatal were suffered last night by the driver of an alleged rum car when a spectacular chase culmi- nated in th2 overturning of the car. Harry Wilson, colored, 23 years old, of 2309% Champlain street, was at the wheel of the heavily-laden whisky ma- chine when it turned over several times at the triangle bounded by Rock Creek Church road, Fifth and Quincy streets. In pursuit at the time were Sergt. George M. Little, George C. Deye, W. A. Schotter and Rudolph Schleichert. Both Wilson and his companion, Jo= seph Parham, colored, 26 years old, of 1710 V strcet, were removed to Emer- gency Huspltal The former was treated for a fractured skull, several broken wibs and internal injuries, while the latter had a lacerated head. The pair later were taken to Gallinger Hospital and placed under police guard. ‘The Little squad began chasing the yum machine on Riggs road near the District line, A smoke screen was laid down by the liquor runners as the race rocceded at 65 miles an hour. The flson automobile was practically de- molished as the crash occurred when the driver failed to negotiate a turn. Police seized the cargo of 132 gallons ©of whisky and 5 gallons of alcohol. ‘The confiscated contraband was stored in the tenth precinct. Wilson was charged with reckless driving, operating @& smoke screen and illegal possession of whisky, Parham was charged with pos- session. It was reported additional charges of transportation probably 'would be preferred after a Police Court investigation. LINDY PARK PROPQSED ST. PAUL, Minn., January 15 (#).— ‘A mew honor is to come to Col. Charles A. Lindbergh, if State Senator Chris Rosenmeier’s bill to create a State park on the old Lindbergh farm is passed. He planned to introduce the measure today in the State Senate. About 90 acres of the farm where Lindbergh lived as a boy and where he first felt urge to fly would be converted into the park under the bill single doors. | | The peach wand dipped earthward. | sponsors a cours: in geol ‘Witch’ Finds Water With Peach Switch As Engineer Fails! Man Proves Claim to| Prowess and That School Board Owes Him $185. By the Assoclated Press. KANSAS CITY, Janur.cy 15.—A peach switch “divining rod” solved a perplex- irfg problem yesterday for a board of education disappointed by science work- ing through the medium of an engineer. D. W. Hamilton ran his spads into a stream of water 53 feet under ground, proving to himself his claim that he is a water witch and to the board that it owes him $185. Some wecks ago an engineer, with| nothing to guide him but geology, | drilled an 80-foot well on the schooi ! grounds which terminated in solid rock | and dissatisfaction among board | members. Then Hamilton, self-styled water witch, stepped in with a forked branch cut from a peach tree. Holding it be- tween his thumbs as an invert:d “¥” he marched across the school ground. “There is plenty of water here,” was the “witch’s” diagnosis. But the board | Besides there was its $100 dry hole. It offered a contract on a basis of “no water, no | pay.” He nonchalantly reached for a spade. Hamilton says it's the man and the switch. The engineer says it is pure luck. At any rate the board has a! 1,000-gallon-a-day well just 30 feet from its dry hole. | OFFICIAL PAYS EXPENSES Minnesota Bank Commissioner’s Practice Covers Seven Years. ST.
