Lean Stewing tFormer BRIG. GEN. WINTER DIES IN HOSPITAL ,Commandant of Army Medical School Served in France and England. Brig. Gen. Francis A. Winter, 63 years old, retired surgeon of the United States Army, died in Walter Reed Hospital yesterday after a long illness. Gen. Winter served with distinction in the Spanish-American War and later in the Philippine Islands, where he won a silver star citation for gallantry in June, 1899. He also was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for services overseas during the World War. He was placed on the retired list in 1922, Gen. Winter is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary D. Winter, of 1911 R street, and a daughter, Mrs. Edmund G. Cham- berlain, of San’ Antonio, Tex. Headed Medical School. During the World War Gen. Winter was chief surgeon with the American expeditionary forces in the line of com- munications, and also served as chief surgeon with the A. E. F. in England. Following the war he became -com- mandant of the Army Medical School in this city. A native of Francisville, La., Gen. Winter recelved his education at St. Vincent’s College in Missouri, at the Bethel Military Academy in Virginia and at the St. Louis Medical College, w'?lere he received his degree in medi- cine.
