PHILADELPHIA, January 3.—The ehva quality of human temperament known as “genius” may be captured and dominated by the biologist of the future, in the opinion of Prof. Julian Huxley. In an address here last night the noted English biologist and lecturer at King's College of London UniverSity predicted that a hundred years from now the manipulation of a human gland may be able to substitute desir- able for undesirable, characteristics of temperament in the growing child. ' is is an age in which we pay more attention to our automobile than we do to our bodies. But the time is coming when the findings of biology will switch interest to the remarkable possibilities of changing the outward and inner nature of man as the result of biological knowledge. X0 will be found possible to modify the human organism in desirable ways, to alter the actual inherited nature of man. Stronger and more flexible Lhnn the fine steel wire previously used, the tungsten helped to eliminate errors. A wire one-thousandth of an inch | | thick suspended a tiny bar made to re- semble a dumbbell by having a two- filament ounce glass ball attached to each end. This feathery dumbbell would move slowly when two steel cylinders, each | weighing 140 pounds, were placed closcl to_the balls. The rotational movement, Dr. Heyl said, was caused by the gravitational| pull of the big weights upon the glass| balls, a pull equivalent lpproximnulyl to the weight of the period at the end| of this sentence. accurately was the main job. ‘The apparatus differed from previous obtaining a very slow swing of the dumbbell, so that the scientists designs could measure the effect of a swing lasting five minutes instead of one tak- ing but about half a minute. This also made for greater accuracy. As a result, the pull of gravitation was found slightly larger than previously believed. Know- ing this pull, called the gravitation con- stant, the earth’'s weight was obtained by mathematical computation. Shows Less Density. ‘The new gravitational value, said Dr. Heyl, changes no earthly weights, no nautical tables. It might make a which out from the sun than the new Pluto. It might be useful to lanet, in in calculations of the distance across space. It shows that the earth has slightly less density than formerly estimated— that is, not quite so hard. If all humans and their live stock were moved to the moon, Dr. Heyl re- marked, the drop in the earth's total Dellghtful Apartments— Attractive Rentals suites in this splendid Apartment Building where vacancies occur only for 2901 Connecticut Avenue Northeast Corner Conn. and Cathedral Aves.
