SO0 1 4. 7. 43 e R} “LOOKING FOR SOMETHING IN A DRESS, MADAME?" “NO, SOMETHING IN TROUSERS. MY HUSBAND.” MOVIES AND MOVIE PEOPLE BY MOLLIE MERRICK. HOLLYWOOD, Calif., December 20 KN.AN.A)—“A girl needs more than #n emerald ring and an ermine coat to make her happy,” said Dorothy Sebas- tian one day when some one remarked that her romance with Clarence Brown bad suffered a sudden chill, . The classic line virtually was the @ranite cross which marked the spot Where the Brown-Sebastian love story came to a close. Yesterday morning Dorothy Sebastian nd Bill Boyd were en reute to Las Vegas to a parson. It's a town just over the Nevada border, where you don’t have to file three days’ ndtice of intention to wed; it's a town famous by reason of the fact that the short-lived romance of Ina Claire and Jack Gilbert had its ceremonial there—in short, it's a little ‘Western Gretna Green, where every one, from the mayor to the mortician horns in on the wedding ceremonies in one gapacity or another. . ‘The romance of Dorothy Sebastian and Bill Boyd has been watched with interest by colony. s, Clarence ‘Brown, Dorothy Sebastian’s erstwhile flance, has consoled himself for the loss th a very lovely little blond—sister to etta Young. - ‘The honeymooners met when Dor- othy Sebastian was called to play the dead in Bill Boyd's picture, “His First Command.” His first wife, Elinor Fair, from whom he was recently divorced, met him precisely the same way. She ‘was - his lady in “The Volga tman.” Elinor Fair, all lovely and slim (she €ame down 20-odd pounds, and with a dewy complexion of the sort you love to touch), is all ready for the cameras , one hears. It's that way in village. Off with an old romance is nerally the signal for on with a g:lnd-m movie contract. One hears the bride wore a brown ¥elvet frock and a sable overcoat—or maybe it was mink. At any rate, it was fluffy brown fur, just the color of her eyes. She’s a very good-looking lass, is second Mrs. Bill Boyd, with the rownest eyes imaginable. And if classic remarks really mean Inything in life, she has found plenty heart in her, romance with Bill Boyd. “A girl needs more than an emerald ng and an ermine coat to make her ppy.” And you'll be interested to know that Janet Gaynor is doing as nicely as can be expetted after an appendix opera- tion. Which makes for a whole lot of smiles on Fox studio lots. They gave a preview of her first pic- ture with Charlie Farrell since the comeback, “The Man Who Came Back,” a story which deviates from the Gaynor formula to the extent of allow- ing the heroine to “go to hell” in her own way when she is made to believe the hero has been making a fool of sorts out of her. Her way happens to be dope and cocktails via a Shanghai opium den. Very heaVy meat for little Gaynor. But the company makes up for some of this callous departure by keeping her in the ruffied frocks of “Seventh Heaven” on all occasions not staged strictly inside the walls of the above-mentioned dive. Even the sonorous tones of a sym- phony orchestra backgrounding the stiffer moments fail to invest the thing with the glory and the grandeur it should have as an epic of a regenrated soul. I almost said “rejuvenated”—the Hollywood influence. ‘The story is ‘undoubtedly the Fox compromise with Janet Gaynor’s his- trionic ambitions. I understand the crux of her battle with them centers about “Common Clay,” a story which she felt she was highly eligible to play, but Winfield Sheehan thought better. Now the Gaynor has had a taste of heavy acting, and the public will have a chance to see her as a heavy actress. And if you all feel about is as I do, ‘welcome her back to wistful, ten- roles where the heroine doesn’t “go to hell” in her own way. (Copyright, 1930, by North American News- paper Alliance.)
