AMERICAN POMIPE RUINS ARE SOUGHT Pennsylvama Expedition to Dig for Supposed Buried City in Arizona. ” at 2:30, 4:15, By the Associated Press. PHILADELPHIA, December 4.—The ruins of an “American Pompefl" will be sought in Arizona next year by an expedition of the University of Penn- sylvania Museum. This was disclosed today by Dr. Harold S. Colton, professor of anthro- pology at the university and a member of the expedition the museum has had for several years in the feld near Flag- staff, Arizs. ‘The ruins, Dr. Colton said, are be- lieved to lie beneath a layer of black basaltic sand 18 to 20 feet thick, whlch in turn is overlaid by centuries of drift sand deposits. Should the buried clty be located it is expected that mnny relics revealing the habits and customs M Lhe real American pioneers will yevedled to university fleld workers when a number of it Pueblo ruins were discovered showing that volcanic action had been heavy in the vicinity after the dwellings of the Indians had been in ruins several hundred years. Sunset Crater, near the Coconino forests of Arizona, held responsible for the eruptio which are estimated by sci- musu to have occurred centuries ago. Efforts to learn the date of the erup- tluns will be made by Dr. Colton and Dr. A. E. Douglass, professor of astron- omy at the University of Arizoga; who is reported to have discovered a method of determining geological time in Ariz- ona by means of “tree ring chronology.’ TEACHERS’ ANNUITY AID GRANTED $500 LEGACY Emma L.
