Creation of a new standard for meas- uring light is cited in the annual re- port_of Director George K. Burgess of the Bureau of Standards, as one of the most important achievements at the Bureau during the past year. The re- port was released for publication today. Experimental work in aeronautics and various commercial studies were also named by Dr. Burgess as being of especial importance. ‘The new standard of light, according to Dr. Burgess, is expected eventually to supplant the artificlal standards, such as carbon lamps, which are now used as standards of candl*power by the various nations. SIAR, WASHINGTON |EINSTEIN VISIT HELD TRIBUTE *D. C, TUESDAY, Novhkiibiul 18, 1930. TO AMERICA'S PLACE IN SCIENCE |3 German Physicist Will Use Pasadena Facilities for His Research. Will Enjoy Companionship of Trio of Outstanding U. S. Scientists. BY FREDERIC WILLIAM WILE. America may be destined to be the place where Prof. Albert Einstein will unravel the great scientific mystery of cause and effect. The impending visit of the world-celebrated author of rela- tivity, it is expected here, will be con- cerned mainly with the relation between electricity, magnetism and gravity. These are major aspects of the Einstein theory, about which its discoverer 1s PROF. ALBERT EINSTE! speak scientific German fluently. Relativity's inventor apparently is headed for what a fellow German once called “that land of unlimited P(lll bilities,” in the hope that he will find facilities here for development of his theory. It has largely to do with the nature of space and of the universe, and depends in some part on an impression of the nature of matter. They impinge di- rectly upon his quest for a solution of the cosmic riddle—as he has just put in a public address at Berlin, viz., “whether the hen or the egg came first.” American scientists evince lively in- terest in the plans of Prof. Einstein. At Washington, seat of the National Council and the Carnegie In- stitution, twin hubs of the American scientific universe, there is special satis- faction with the German savant’s in- tentions. The brightn-ss of the in- terfor of the tube has been found to equal 58.84¢ candles per square cen- timeter. A recommendation has been made by the Bureau that this standard be accepted by the International Commit- tee on Weights and Measures.
