LINCOLN-DEFENDE R0AD 0 BE SOLD Fate of Chicago & Alton Re- |- calls Martyr’s Role of Lawyer in 1850. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, November 15.—When they sell the old Chicago & Alton Railroad fron '?ic'z'x‘f“.‘:’“ ot at Wilmiagton, 1 i e im! l.flckmm the fiu'med lloe M Abn Lincoln’s ghost, for Lincoln used to be its “lawyer.” He defended it back in the 1850s life as the Alton Has 1, l.‘ Miles of Track. ‘The road is now valiled at ngrmxi- mately $125,000,000. It has a li less than 1,100 miles of track. The present is a culmination of preparatory for its absorption by the Balti- & Ohio. These plans have been for several months, through 'lfil the holders of the bond- ed the road, which amounts to uoooooon approximately. Predominantly a *short-haul” road, the advent of the automobile and the bus to general us€ in this field of trans- portation was a more than ordinarily severe blow, and eight years ago when & coal strike and a rallroad employes’ ‘walkout struck its important revenue area in the Illinois coal flelds it went " dickes Difficulties in Past. This means increast sum) for increased productiol Inventories are low n present. Re- tail prlc- also are lower than they have been in seme years. Marchants appar- ln ently have awakened to the fact that it is necessary for them to pass on the reduced prices to consumers. Those who can afford to do so can make their pur- chases in what is known as a good buy- eys’ market. Unemployment Problem. The present state of unemployment y emphasizes that there will always be something wrong with the industrial structure of our country until we are able to assure a job to every man will- Inf and able to work. Whether we can solve this problem by reducing hours of work, part-time employment in times of stress or other means remain to be seen. It Is & puzzle for the expeits to work out. Business will be ing to co-operate heartily in any plan ‘h.lch makes better economic conditions. If we could only throw off our present fear complex, money would be released in vast amounts to buy raw materials, and the finished product as well. That would stimulate manufacturing and construction, and consequently reduce unemployment. We don’t need to find a way to boom the stock market or to encourage lg n-uk campaigns on the “buy now” fl.wm buy if they will only look w the future with confidence. The condition of the sav- ings nks, where deposits have in- creased some $700,000,000 in the last seven months, indicate many people are not in threatened distress. Our return to normal times is predi- cated upon maintaining our present . | high standard of living. There can be r railroad groups, including the Union Pacific, tried several times to re- habilitate the property, but abandoned their efloru. usually with losses. most of the 77 years of its ex- istence it has been distinctly a “home” railroad. It developed with the country 1t served and never was much moved to look longingly out of it. Radio Business. ‘The radio business is onme of our leading industries now. It is no-longer & luxury to own a radio set, but a ne- cessity to many of our people. Through it they are provided with entertainment and education. It serves to furnish en- Joyment to millions of people every day and night. There are some 15,000,000 sets in this country. THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, BOSTON MERCHANT SEES RECOVERY IN NATION’S BUSINESS (Continued From PFirst Page. “Enlightened selfishness will keep wages at their present level, and eventually higher, even while prices continue to decline. I base my conclusions on these two propositions: First, because mass pmflucflon. which is fast dominating all our major industries, gets greater and greater total profits out of declin- ing prices. This will more and more ply to raw materials and agricultural products. And secondly, because prices will continue to decline still further unless wages are kept up and buying ‘nn hich de- power maintained. If wag: decreased, termine buying power, ar then prices must decline still further i ‘because there are no market values in most of the commodities excepting what they can be sold for in the market. Under the pressure of our present needs, | 5 if we attack and conquer the very large we will find there a much more fertile again profitable.” Short Selling. “Do you believe, in this crisis, that short selling on the New York Stock Exchange should be curtailed or pro- hibited, as many are now advocating?” was my next question. “I believe that there should be a study made of stock market cycles, similar to those studies of business cycles that we have found so useful,” was the Boston merchant’s reply. “Ex- perience in the past year must have convinced us that no lasting control of the former ‘can be accomplished without some mastery of the latter. Such a study will determine scientifical- selling should be or - hibited.” e The next question was: “Prices con- States, but throughout the world. Do you‘see any permanent recovery until this situation is corrected? How do you think this should be met?” “Of course, I sympathize with people who are hurt by drcpping prices,” said Mr. Filene. “Basically, there is no remedy for unemployment so effective as very low prices. If everything we wanted or needed could be possibly sold for 5 and 10 cents there wouldn't be workers enough in the country to sup- r |of intelli ply the demand. Droj only those who are not up to date in their production or business methods. Chevrolet, Ford, Woolworth and many others of the successful icers and distributors are trying all the time to drop prices, and are making more und more money as they sell cheaper and cheaper. This is as true of farm prod- ucts as of manufactured cts. If our farmers cannot be hel to learn how to make profits out of dropping prices, by using scientific mass pro- ducmon methods, then they will be forced out of the world market within a few years by the mass production farming methods of Russia and possi- bly some of the other nations.” Unemployment Relief. “What should be done to alleviate still - further the unemployment dis- tress?” was my fifth question. you favor an unemployment insurance plan supported by industry and super- vised by the auw ‘Would a five-day week. or a shorter one, help?” “We should give until it hurts to al- leviate the immediate distress of the unemployed, who are the victims of bad business thinking and who are being 1 [tempted by the still worse business thinking of Socialism and Communism,” was Mr. Filene’s reply. “The most suc- cessful business men of the country are substantially agreed that bad business and unmgloyment are the result of bad business ing and as preventable as yzllo' fever or smallpox. “The time is soon coming,” he went n, “and the steps toward it should be- nt selfishness, will pul assume responsibility for such a ly. The ult will be that accepting the hct ! want to make steady profits they must 80 organize as to keep their employes conquering l'.lll exists in production and more so tion. "By keeping up the buying power of the masses the year round—simply through neplu them at work the year round—we make greater total profits than :ver before md will, at the same time, wn*ler some of the great political and al wastes that do and must exist under our present method.” The Anti-Trust Laws. “Would & modification of the anti- trust laws be of especial value now?” I asked. “Yes, I think they would” said Mr. Filene. “I think a modification of the anti-trust laws would be of special value, I think perhaps modificftion is called for in order to make the best mass production and mass distribution ef- fective. However, I do not think that this modification is likely to come until the various industries and trades find some methods of controlling any buc- caneers in business, who try to misuse their liberty.” “Most ol ers believe that the United States must lead in the world’s business recovery. If that is so, what industries, in your opinion, are likely to take the lead?” was my final ques- bank clearings xmmhx {55l | ot “It is very possible,” replied this Boston merchant at length, “that many industries may lead in the world's business recovery. Mass pro- duction does and must dominate all industries that produce the needs, the comforts and the rational luxuries of the masses of the world. Mass produc- tion must pay mass production wages and salaries, which means wages and salaries adequate to buy the masses of things that mass production must produce. Furniture Industry. “For instance, the furniture industry can become a leader. The furniture industry, producing and distributing as effectively as Chevrolet and Ford, can rofitably reduce its prices to one- ird of the present prices, which will result in pl’ll.‘tlc.lly unlimited demand for a number of years. “Sooner or later, the airplane in- dustry will l1cad. I saw an airplane in Europe this Summer taxe off and land almost vertically. The automobile in- dustry went into mass production and made prosperity as fast as good roads were provided. The airplane made safe for the average man, as it will be, will find unlimited good roads already pro- vided by nature. “Other industries also will develop rapidly_and help prosperity.” Mr. Pilene once coined the words “companionate prcsperity” to denote the close relationship which exists between the prosperity of one mduury and another, He explained it these words: “If any one industry or any class of - people or any one naticn is depressed, Shaded areas show weeks of sctivity abeve the correspo: ear. Black aress indieate declines ftrows <ame weeks 12 months earlier. ACTIVITY BY FEDERAL RESERVE Dl!'l'l-lfll ] of us will suffer from the reduced Blying Bower that resuits.
