After His inaugural address, delivered in His Ser- mon on the Mount, that outlined the principles of the Lord returned to Capernaum to give & practical demonstration of His gospel. ‘Through our failure to grasp and prac- tice His teachings we face the perils of war, because the nations of the earth have not learned how to overcome racial and national prejudices through faith in one another and love for all mankind. Christ received an enthusiastic re- ception upon His return to Capernaum, that had become His headquarters. He was met by a delegation of prominent leaders of the Jews, requesting Him to comply with the petition of a Roman centurion, use he had proven his love for the Jewish people. Although he was the official representative of the government that they hated and de- spised, this man by his sympathetic attitude toward their faith and gener- ous giving of a synagogue had demon- strated that he was worthy. This cen- turion had accepted evidently the Hebrew faith, bfi‘ll had not become a plea for His assistance Jesus said, “I will come and heal him.” These words revealed at once the fact that Jesus was willing to minister to men of an alien race. He sympathized with the centurion’s love for his slave. He rec- ognized that the Roman soldier pos- sessed real faith in His power to heal. When He proposed to go to the centu- rion's home to heal the sick slave the w:h:m' that He would cere- help the suffering slave, The Centurion’s Faith. ‘While the centurion had demonstrated iton, | real faith in the healing power of the Lord Jesus by requesting that He heal his favorite body servant of his nervous trouble, he exhibited courteous consid- eration of the contal tion of the Master, according to the Jewish law, should He carry out His plan to visit the centurion’s Home, by sending Jesus a message that declared that the centurion did not consider that he was worthy of such a consideration.
