FRENCH 0 PUNISH MARKETAGTATORS Action Follows Tardieu’s Ap- peal for Support of French Stability. By the Atsbéiated Press. \Pflmbcmber 21.—The French gov- emment yesteraay ordered judicial in- wvestigation and prosecution of ‘all per- sons suspected. of en, g in acts en- dangering financial markets and illegal speculations imperiling the normal functions of the Stock Exchange. The government action followed closely upon an address by Premier Tardleu Sunday in which he sald France had decided to keep its economic and financial houde in order with the same energy and determination it has manifested in’ preventing meetings or movements calculated to disturb public tranquillity and national security. The premier in his address called upon the“ public for united effort to insure the continued stability of the French gov- ernment, - Rumors Close Bank. It has been known in banking circles | that as the result of what the Paris| press describes as wild rumors one or | two financial houses have been obliged to seek support, and one institution, called the Vasseur Bank, has been forced temporarily to suspend payments following a run of depositors. | The investigation ordered yesterday will be pursued under an article of the penal code which provides imprisonment of from two months t6 two years, with heavy fines, for persons convicted of de- liberately attempting to manipulate the grlces of stocks ‘and bonds for the erance of their own interests. Solid Securities Affected. - ‘The Bourse recently has been nervous and irregular and often has displayed weakness.
