Leaders Supported. BY CLAUDE A. JAGGER, Associated Press Pinancial Editor. NEW YORK, October 8.—The stock market withstood the shock of dis- couraging news from the steel industry falrly well today. Although lufl.tnfinshlran drifted low- er, several g still further into ths, offerings were light and easlly absorbed, and rallying ared during the after- noon. United States Steel dropped more than 2 points to & new 1930 low at 151%, then rallled a point. Youngs- town Sheet dropped 6 points to & new minimum, and gruclble Bethlehem and Colorado Fuel were other steels losing 2 points or more. American Telephone | dropped more than 2 points, but ‘was | supported close to 199. Shares selling | down 2 to 3 included Stone & Webster, | American Water Works, Air Reduction and Corn Products. St. Louis South- western dl'orped 5. Gillette was a soft spot, tumbling 7 points to a new low at 4 evldenuy reflecting reports that the acquisition of Autostrop would require large issuance of senior securities. The resistance offered by the list as leading shares approached last Novem- bearish quarters as indicating that further campaigns would be opposed with cash, as well as warnings about unethical tactics. Furthermore, dull- ness of trading indicated that urgent | liquidation had, for the moment, been completed., Business news, however, was distinct- 1y not of a character to induce elither investors_or speculators to bid for stocks. The Amflcln Iron and Steel Institute’s fls" on September steel rrodu n red '.hlfilowes: o‘um’n that month since 1924, and clearly indicated that the more active inquiry from consumers had been ovsrur.unlud Output was even lower than that of July, although July had been widely accepted as the low month of the year. It appeared that mills had been able to Aill much of the month’s requirement from stocks on hand. United States | Steel’s unfilled tonnage figures will be published on Friday, and may give a clearer picture of the situation. In dis- | cussions of steel demand, it must be remembered that the mere making of contracts does not definitely promise new business, for these contracts are obligations of the mills rather than the consumers, who may refrain from | specitying ¢ against them.
