COMMISSION REJECTS -REALLOCATION MOVE Proposal for Broadeasting Would Have Change—Dialing of American Listeners. Another sweeping realiocation of broadcasting stations—one which would Hhave again changed the dialing habits of American radio listeners everywhere —was averted when a majority of the Federal Radio ission last week rejected a proposal of Judge E.*O. stu. commissioner from the third zone Southern States, to amend the 1928 allocation order to permit duplicated operation on virtually all wave lengths under a plan permitting closer geo- qsplun\ separations between stations. Judge Ira E. Robinson, former chair- man, voted with Judge Sykes on the wn, which, according to Judge Sykes, des to about a more mflefl gone and State division of facilities. Hardly a sta- tdon in the country would have been un- affected had the scheme gone through, but it was voted down by Commission- ers Saltzman, Lafount and Starbuck. The use of practically all the present eleared channels would have been dupli- eated by two or more stations under the Sykes plan. Though 20 channels would have been reserved, as 40 are now, for itions of 5,000 to 50,000 watts power, W0 or more such stations would have been placed on the same channel if ted 2,500 miles from one another. 10 kilocycles apart, the separation be 600 miles: if 20 kilocycles, 350 miles, and if 30 kilocycles, 250 miles. On the 20 other channels now cleared for nocturnal use by only one station at | s time, the simultaneous operation of | net more than three nor less than two stations with maximum powers of 10,000 | watts would be permitted, their separa- tion to be 1,800 miles from one another when on the same frequency, 400 miles ‘when 10 kilocycles apart, 200 miles when 20 kilocycles apart, and 150 miles when 30 kilocycles apart ‘The present mileage separations of stations in the lower power ranges also | was narrowed down, while provision was | de that each zone should have the ume number of stations and equal| power. ‘The majority overruled the| scheme as technically inexpedient be- cause of the interference possibilities and the widespread confusion it would | occasion in present broadcasting prac- | tice and in the habits of American lis- | teners. Nevertheless, Judge Sykes will | undoubtedly press some of his points lnl arder to obtain a compromise with the | majority when the whole problem of h power on the cleared channels is en up. Commufloner Starbuck is understood to be prepared to advance a proposal to set aside one cleared channel in each sone for du 'pucnud operation. This would leave 35 channels free for high- ywer assignments to the numerous ap- (All time p.m., unless oflm‘w‘u indicated.) 315.6 Meters. NEW YORK (#).—The idea for the ultimate television receiver still is nestling in the brain of some great in- V!ntar or experimenter. though engineers feel that ap- rltus today gives fair results, it is nDl the automatic type that will pro- duce the best in pictures by radio. Despite obstacles to be overcome, they do not hesitate to predict that the problem will be licked some day, but will not forecast when that will he ‘Tackling the situation from all angles, scientists in the R. C. A. laboratories at Camden, N. J, have tried practically every known System, The work goes on unabated, the goal sought not yet in sight. Two basic methods have developed many e ents there. These in- volve the use of a scanning disk or a scanning drum, and a' kinescope or special cathode ray tube, a develop- ment of Dr. Viadimir Zworykin. The scanning f ms, _driven by motors, in effect break up the pic- ture into an assembly of tiny dots and also give the eye the impression of a moving picture, although each picture actually consists of thousands of rapldly replaced elements. Scenning disks with small holes have been tried. Other disks had tiny lenses in larger holes. Various types of drums, which resemble short sec- tions of large pipes, also containing holes or lences, have been tested. The holes generally are arranged in a spiral, the number dewrmlnlnl the Mirrors likewise have been in- the drums to give larger & cone-shaped tube, develops a picture on a fluorescent screen in the large end, which is flat, It contains what is known as an elec- tron gun, which paints or reproduces a picture tinted green. It requires no mechanical scanner. Other schemes of illumination have included different sources of light, ' Various types of neon or glow tubes have been given tests. One important item has been the Moore crater lamp, which instead of having a glowing plate, as in most neon tubes, has & pin-point light murce, provldinl a stronger ray and a larger, brllhl.er picture. The neon picture is pi Reproduction of television on a large ureen. such as demonstrated last Fflnl at Schenectady by Dr. E. F. W. Alexanderson, also has been paid close attention along with the de elopment work on television for the home. Apparatus has been assembled in various ways, from the engineer’s bench set-up to completely dux[ned equip- ment as it might look in the homes in the future. None of “, however, has met all of the rigid tests that enzlnm- feel it must pass. Handicapped on so many sides, the engineers are working on, believing that within at least five years, and hnpl.ng it may be sooner, television may be on a par with the national service of sound radio of the present.
