By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, October 1.—Gerhard Melvin Dahl, who 24 years ago was city attorney in a small town in Wisconsin, yesterday was elected chairman of the board of the Interborough Ranid Tran- sit Co, one of the largest ciiy trans- | portation systems in the world. Mr. Dahl was already chairman of the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Cor- poration and his two positions place him at the head of companies operating a total of 1,161 miles of city subways, street car lines and elevated roads, more than two and a quarter billion passengers annually. Move Toward Unification. In addition to being head of the two companies, Mr, Dahl has been author- ized by the Interborough to represent it in all negotiations with New York City in regard to proposed unification of the concerns under his leadership. This authorization was considered by observ- ers to be the first tangible move toward the unification. Mr. Dahl's first experience as a city transport executive was in Cleveland, Ohio, where he was named the first street rallroad commissioner in 1910. He had moved to the city to practice law four years previously. After one year as commissioner he initiated a 3- cent fare, with full transfer privileges. Moves to New York. He held the job for a second year and then came to New York as vice presie | dent of Electric Bond & Share Co. In 1917 Mr. Dahl became a vice presi- dent of the Chase National Bank here and while in that position planned the | reorganization of the New Orleans Rafl- road & Light Co.
