PREHISTORIC CITY INCAVE RESTORED Ancient Pueblo Betatakin Preserved in Navajo Na- tional Monument. A prehistoric city in a cave, one of the most remarkabl e ucheolomcl-l sites in the United S , has been restored practically to its mmu condition. ‘The scientific results of this explora- tion have just been.announced by Dr. Neil M. Judd, curator of New World archeology of the National Museum, who was in charge of the work which started just before the World War. ‘The ancient “city” is Betatakin, in the Navajo National Monument in Arizona. It consisted of 135 distinet rooms or houses, mostly contiguous, of well constructed masonry, built on the ledge of a great cavern opening from the north wall of a precipitous canyon. Betatakin was one of the big towns of the cliff dwellers, presumably erected at the height of their culture, Masterpiece of Masonry. Considering the difficulties encoun- tered by the primitive workmen, pos- sessing only stone hammers and cutting instruments, the town is considered a masterpiece "of masonry. The ledge and the sides of the cave were often pre- cipitous so that the walls had to be erected upon shallow steps pecked out with the stone hammers. Judd fol- lowed the same procedure in restoring the walls, but worked with modern tools, ‘The rooms consisted of dwellings, ceremonial halls and storchouses. The subterranean settlement must have housed a considerable population, but no effort has been made to estimate this or ascribe a date to the ruins. Evidently it afforded a very secure re- treat for the peaceful argicultural people from the marauding bands of Northern Indians, who already were raiding their stores. ‘The dwelling places were distin- guished from the storehouses by the smoke on the walls. The ceremonial N for | pital 50, in- rite_or Phone R. L. ISHERWOOD, 1513 28th St. S.E. s, Sometimen, 34 Totnd: the walls. Judd found, dwellings were mnodeled for re- Atmosphere Preserved. During the centuries which followed the abandonment of the eblo. Judd relates, many of the had col- lapsed, tons n( ‘wind-| blo'n sand had been lodged in the empty rooms, and huge blocks of sandstene had broken from the cave roof. Throughout the restoration work, he says, the workers sought to preserve the prehistoric at- mosphere of the place, and wherever modern handicraft was essential this was carefully disfigure The work involved recovering the secret of the mud mortar with which the ehistoric builders bound the e blocks of houses together. This mortar, in many cases, had out- lasted the stone. It consisted of a mix- ture of sand and red clay. Stones and timbers from the shattered dwellings ‘were nlvued and reused.
