NEW YORK, September 20.—Lewis Yancey and two companions, whose 20,000-mile flight over South America in a good will plane ended in a forced landing on a West Indles isle, came back to New York yesterday aboard ship. Capt. Yancey, Co-pilot Emil Burgin and Radlo Operator Zeh Bouck were downcast at the loss of their plane, which burned, with all their clothing and souvenirs, when it came down on Great Exuma Island, but they expressed pride in the functioning of its radio equipment, with which during their South American piigrimage they talked frequently with United States cities. Motor Begins “Cutting.” ” Bouck sald the plane had about 30, miles to go when the motor began “cutting” at a 4,000-foot altitude. Hed sent out & “qualified 50 S,” which was picked up by the Pan-American station at_Camaguay. ‘ “Notify steamers?” asked the Pan-, American operator. “We don't know; may make ", Bouck replied. “Where are you now? ‘Got 10 minutes to go. “Hope you make it.” “So do we.” “Hear from you again?" “Yes, if we don't crack up.” Turns Over in Landing. A minute later Bouck sent one m call, saying the plane was over lai By that time its altitude was only 800 feet and sinking fast. It turned over as it landed and the fiyers barely got out of the wreckage when fire broke out. Prom Great Exuma Island the fiyets made their way to the Bahamas in & sailing boat, then went by boat to Miami and boarded the liner Mohawk, which brought them home today. . They had been gone since May 14, when they took off from Curtiss Field on a flight which took them to most of the major cities of South America. HAMMERSTEIN ARRESTED Theatrical Producer Charged With Assaulting Dance Director. ONEW YORK, September 20 (F).— Arthur Hammerstein, theatrical pro- ducer, was ordered held yesterday ofr: trial on an assault charge brought against him by George Haskell, a dance director. The charge grew out of an alterca- tion between Hammerstein and Haskell which involved Harold and Sally Rand, brother and sister, in the chorus of Hammerstein's musical comedy “Luana.” . Hammerstein was alleged to have struck Haskell, whom he later discharged as director of the show's dances, after a quarrel between Haskell and the Rands. — LEGAL NOTICES. AN .
