B-—10 PR s S WILD LIFE FRIEND SEES GAME FAMINE { Waterfow! Rapidly Are Near- ing Extermination Before Vast Army, He Says. @pecial Dispatch to The Star. STAMFORD, Conn., September 19.— As the duck season opens, Dr. William . Hornaday, veteran champion of wild }ife and authority on game conserva- tlon, sees little hope for American waterfowl, An army of 6414454 Mcensed hunters, unlimbering pump guns which shoot six shots in five sec- onds, moves against the shattered bird legions. Automobiles, widening the killing range, and these murderous pump guns, | with inadequate legislation, have made this a dark and bloody era for the crea- tures of the woods, according to Dr. ‘Hornaday. The heath hen, the California grizely bear, the passenger pigeon, the buffalo, the prong-horned antelope are extinct; the moose is almost gone and the big- horn is killed as game in only one State. Waterfowl cannot much longer resist the annual slaughter. Twenty-nine States have found ducks and geese diminishing so rapidly that they have Jowered the game limits below the Fed- eral maximum. Thus Dr. Hornaday, holding medals and decorations from many govern- ments for his work in behalf of wild life, admits that, so far as the United tates is concerned, he has been waging losing fight, and that Congress holds the only hope of saving game. Asked about the Norbeck-Andresen bill, creating 150 Federal bird sanc- tuaries, and signed by President Cool- idge on February 19, 1929, Dr. Horna- day said a petiod of years would be re- | »quired to determine its effectiveness. ‘The bill provides for a total appropria- tlon of $7.875.000 to be expended for game protection over a period of 10| years. Expenditures to date have been $75.000. “Our open seasons on waterfowl are | murderous and disgraceful,” Dr. Horna- | day says. “They vary from 12 to 14 weeks, and they must and shall be re- duced by Congress to eight weeks onl!
