CHICAGO, September 16.—Bullets are believed to have torn away one side ° of a triangle Sunday night when Harry Brandon, unsuccessful suitor for the hand of Mrs. Jean Marshall, is said to have entered her flat and to have slain the man she planned to marry, Joseph Carney. She told police: “He came to the apartment, waving # gun. He shouted to Joe, ‘You took her from me, now you're going to get yours” Then he shot. He came to- ward me, pointing the smoking revolver. 1 said, ‘Why didn’t you shoot me in- stead?’ He looked at me a minute, then ran out of the room. “I ran over and knelt beside Joe on the floor. ‘Kiss me before I die’ he sald. I kissed him and he closed his eyes.” Mrs. Marshall, a divorcee, said she and Carney were to have been married next Saturday. Brandon, learning this, came to the apartment late Sunday and congratulated them. He assured them both that he was a “good loser” and went away. It was several hours later that he returned with the pistol, Mrs. Marshall said. Former Seattle Field Agent Takes Stand Atfer Collapse During Testimony Friday. By the Associated Press. SEATTLE, Wash,, September 16— Earl Corwin, former field agent of the prohibition office here, who collapsed on the witness stand Friday, yesterday resumed his denial that he or three other former prohibition officials ac- cused of corruption and bribery ever accepted protection money from boot- legging rings. Corwin is the last of the four de- fendants to testify. Roy C. Lyle, for- mer administrator; Willlam M. Whitney, Jegal adviser, and R. L. Fryant, former agent, previously had told how dry laws were enforced in the Pacific Northwest. “Just & plain lie,” Corwin character- ized the testimony of Alfred M. Hub- bard, former agent, who accused Cor- win and the other dry officials of ac- cepting protection payments from Chris Emy Curtis, alleged head of the Grays Har- bor rum ring. . % 55 i r B English Lounge Chair Suite This magnificent suite is uphol- stered in combination mohair all $ over and has linen frieze on reverse ’ L4 . * Combination Mohair Suite Serpentine-front design three-piece suite consisting of a settee, armchair and club $ chair with pleated backs and resilient, spring-filled seat cushions.
