Mipscial Dispatch to The Star. 3 NEW YORK, September 16.—Un. favorable trade news, combined with ¥he calling of wheat loans, which forced in speculators to sell their security | llate: caused prices to move lower | on the Curb Exchange today. | Public utilities led the decline, but ' were closely followed by a long list of miscellaneous issues, including olls, radios, coppers, amusements and invest- ment trusts. Electric Bond & Share lost about a int, and American & Foreign Power, ts principal subsidiary, was off nearly that amount. Standard Oil of Indiana, Cities Service and Eastern States Power B declined fractionally. Technicolor again proved to be the softest spot in the amusements, sinking rapidly to & new low mark. The reduc- tion of export copper prices caused Red- Metal shares to drop. Petroleum issues paid less attention to trade news, which, on the whole, was favorable, than to market movements. Liberal offerings of stocks from Chi- cago and other Midwestern cities for the account of speculators in wheat took place during the morning. In many instances banks called wheat loans, which resulted in forced selling | of securities. 1115 1051 Alu Coof Am pf (6).. [ More than $304.000,000 worth of - American merchandise was received in the Par Eest in the first six months of this year, L Washington Ticker BY CHAS. P. SHAEFFER. A national credit survey by the De- partment of Commerce covering seven types of retail stores located in 24 cities of the country gives the loss suffered through acceptance of freudulent checks as only 0.1 per cent of total net sales during the first six months of 1930. The stores’ classifications covered in the survey included de- partment, furniture, jewelry, men's clothing, shoe, women's specialty and electrical appliance. Of the 336 stores reporting on this specific phase two groups proved im- mune from losses of this sort, namely, furniture and electrical appliance stores. Jewelry establishments suf- fered to the extént of .01 per cent, followed by shoe and women's ty stores with .02 per cent, while d Flrtm!nt and men’s clothing stores lost .1 per cent each. One hundred and sixty reporting stores had an average loss on open credit accounts of 0.6 per cent, and of instaliment accounts of 1.9 p:r cent. Bad debt losses on installment sales were thus more than three ftimes as great as these on open credit sales for the stores reporting. Jewelry stores had the lowest open credit loss, 0.1 per cent, and the h'ghest installment credit loss, 6.3 per cent, .Electrical ap- pliance stores had the highest open credit loss, 2.2 per cent, and the 1ow- est_installment credit loss, 0.8 per cent. Returns and allowances for the first six months for all stores increased over those of the first six months of last year. These items on gross cash sales in- | creased from 3.7 per cent in 1920 to 3.9 | per cent in 1930; on gross open credit | sales, from 11.4 per cent last year to | 11,7 in 1930, and on gross installment | sales, from 13.7 per cent in 1929 to 14.6 per cent in 1930. | stores had the highest percenta; !turns and allowances on cas) | shoa stores the highest percentage on | open credit sales, and jewelry stores the | highest on instaliment sales. | Goif can be fairly rated as the most popular American sport on the basis of a Census Bureau statement, which shows this form of athletics leading all others in so far as manufacture of para- | phernalia and rate of increase in’pro- duction is concerned. Golf goods shipped or delivered in 1920 amounted to $17.908,153 of the [;m. total of $48,900483 for all sport- ‘tng nd athletic goods, excluding fire- arms and ammunition. This figure rep- resents an inercase of 46 per cent over 1927, the last census year, a figure far in excess of the 237 p-r cent gain regis- | tered for the entire sport ng poods group | The remeinder of th~ total for 1929 is | | made up as follows: Tann' 690.734; base bal' grods, "5, "..,632. feot | ball, basket ball. boxing, etc., goode. $3,803,226: fishing r.pparatus, $8,572,607: skates, $4,873,961; gymnasium goods, 054,781; miscellaneous goods, $2,107.
