By the Associated Press. | SPRINGFIELD, 1L, August 15.—Wil- | liam Green, president of the American Federation of Labor, has joined the fight against the insurgent Illinois | Miners' Union. | In a letter to Victor A. Olander, ‘s(‘(‘remry of the Illinois Federation of | Labor, made public yesterday, Green re- quested that delegates of the revolting minets faction be denied seats in the State federation copvention in Spring- field, September 15, The request was Green's first official cognizance of the Illinols group since it broke away from the United Mine Workers of America at the Springfield rump convention last March. Formation of the Illinois Mine Union capped a two-year fight between Tllinois miners, then under the leadership of | Harry Pishwick, and John L. Lewis, | president of the United Mine Workers. | " Open battle broke out in October, |1ast year, when Lewis revoked the | charter of the Illinois Miners' Union. | Fishwick and his followers then de- clared the United Mine Workers was dis- solved as Lewis had failed to call an an- nual convention in accordance with the constitution. Lewis replied that he polled the membership and secured au- thority to continue the organization until a meeting could be called. The Illinols Union then met in sSpringfield and elected Alex Howatt {president. At the same time the United | Mine Workers convened in Indianapolis. John H. Walker, secretary of the | Tlinois Miners, it' was pointed out, |*wields strong influence among State | federation members due to his long | service as president and it was thought | he could muster enough strength to as- sure at least a vigorous battle over seating his delegates. Lewis is restrained under injunction from interfering with the insurgent | body. CITY NEWS IN BRIEF. TODAY. Meeting, Cushing Auxiliary, Pyth- ian Temple, 8 p.m. FUTURE.
