LONDON, August 6 (N.AN.A.).—The King is never happier than while sail- ing his racing yacht Britannia, and this year he and the Queen are spend- ing a fortnight instead of the usual week end at Cowes for the regatta. ‘The Britannia has had a new coat of shining black paint and in the royal saloon there are deep blue brocade cur- tains and furnishings and panels of mahogany. In the ladies’ cabin are crimson silk curtains and deep-cush- ioned armchairs. Considering her age, the Britannia is & wonderful boat and the King is sailing her in a number of races. ‘The royal yacht Victoria and Albert, which becomes their majesties' home while they are at Cowes, needs little preparation for its royal occupants. It is always kept in readiness and fully manned. The main addition to the yacht when fhe King and Queen arrive is a band. Vessel Simply Furnished. ‘Though a fine-looking vessel, the Vics toria and Albert is very simply fur- nished. When aboard her their majes- ties like to lead the quiet, simple life they are so fond of. Each night they retire to their own apartments at 10:30 p.m. and every morning they are on deck by 9 o'clock, when the Queen is ready to be taken ashore to visit friends or examine the antique shops in the Isle | of Wight or in Hampshire. * The King reads a good deal when he is not racing. His favorite spot on the Victoria and Albert is a corner of the bridge, where he can smoke in peace and command excellent views on every side. Here in a deck chair placed for his accommodation he reads many of the new books brought aboard the yacht for his entertainment, his choice nearly always falling on works of biog- raphy or travel. ie Queen devotes a good deal of her time to needlework when afloat, and this year she hopes to make some gar- ments for the use of Princess Elizabeth, She chooses some sheltered spot on the promenade deck and here she sits for considerable periods, her fingers busily employed with her needlework while she chats with those in attend- ance upon her. Courtauld Yacht Striking. One of the most striking boats in Cowes Roads this year is the 700-ton ;&cht Virginia, which has been built or Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Courtauld in a very modern and untraditional man- ner. The big dining room, which will seat 24 people, has been decorated in 12 varieties of maplewood. The oval table has been made out of one solid piece of bird’s-eye maple and above it is an oval trough in the ceiling, with concealed lighting. An amusing feature of the room is the inlay to suggest five continents. For Europe there is a classic temple and a forest, for America & palm and an Aztec ruin, for Africa a pyramid and for Asia a view of a Burmese temple. Satinwood has been used for Mrs. Courtauld’s bed room, whi¢h has rounded corners inset with glass to prow vide concealed lighting. The dressing table, wardrobe and sets o. drawers are all built into the walls, so that no fur- niture is to be seen at all. For the lounge Mlle.
