The Dagger--- SYNOPSIS: Dagger Marley, 16-year-old niece of Jim Marley, Texas rancher, res- cues Blaine Howard, American adven- furer, from some Mexican insurgent: and falls in love with him. Howar Who has & w.c he does not love, resists the temptation to return Dageers af- fection and leaves the Marley ranch to join the allied armies in Prance. Later he i reported missing and probably dead. and Dagger is heartbroken. Dick Weiling. an_Englishman, who has come to the ranch to forget some past trou- bles, leaves to buy horses for the British Army. America enters the war, and Dag- ®er goes to visit an aunt in San An- tonio, where she meets Capt. John Vaneering. fiving ace. He gives her an opportunity to learn to fiv. and falls in Jove with her. but she belittles his prot- estations of affection. (Continued From Yesterday's Star.) CHAPTER XL DAGGER TAKES TO THE AIR. The world was become a forcing house for youth. Overnight, almost, boys and girls sprang from adolescence to maturity. eager, avid of experience. | restless under the impending threat of | death. Vaneering had lived in this| atmosphere for three years: it had im- pregnated his being. “Be happy today. for tomorrow you'll probably be dead’ was his motto, as it was his comrades’ and he preached it quite honestly. Dagger. like most of her generation, received it unquestioningly. She saw it being verified all around her. Boys she had danced with the night before crashed in the morning flights: brothers of girls she knew vanished blankly in the nightmare of the trenches. Vaneering seldom spoke_ on this theme—perhaps_because_he “¥as sub- consciously aware that Dagger required no arguments to pccept it. But if he plumed himself on being directly re- sponsible for her acquiescence to it he ‘was mistaken. Although she compelled herself, with iron resolution, to keep Howard out of her thoughts, the mem- ory of his loss was unescapable. He had come into her life, and gone as these other boys and men were going out of other people’s lives. And, resentfully, SAGO-DANVILLE ROAD PLANS RECOMMENDED “Farm-to-Market’ Highway Serves TLarge Section of Pittsylvania County. . but there's Wait a few Special Dispatch to The Star. DANVILLE, Va. August 7.—The hearing held by the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors on Monday re- sulted in the board agreeing to recom- mend to the State Highway Commission at its meeting in Lynchburg in October the improvement of the Sago to Dan- ville road, thence to the Halifax County line. A delegation of about 150 appeared and presented petitions bearing hun- dreds of names of residents along this proposed “farm-to-market” road and serving a large section of the county. Petitions were presented by various other delegations for a part of the State allocation of 37.8 miles to Pittsylvania County, including 7.3 miles from Cas- cade to the Henry County line by way of Cascade; a road from Callands by Oak Hill to the North Carolina line; a 12-mile stretch on the Danville-Halifax road by way of Ringgold; 14 miles on the Chatham-Martinsville road by Cal- lands to connect with the Henry County road and a 12-mile gap on the Long Is- land road. No definite action was taken on these petitions, but it is felt that recommendations will be made in some instances, the allocations to be entirely with the Highway Commission. . MRS. HANNAH ELECTED RED CROSS PRESIDENT Falls Church District Branch of Fairfax County Group Holds Meeting. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. ANNANDALE, Va, August 7.—Mrs. D. Frank Hannah was elected president of the Falls Church district branch of the Fairfax County Chapter, American Red Cross, which was organized Tues- day. The meeting was held at Mrs. Hannah's home and was attended by Tepresentatives from most of the com- munities_in the district. A Mrs. John N. Howdershell of Lin- eolnia was elected secretary and Mrs. Claude W. Oliver of Baileys Cross Roads treasurer. It was decided to hold quarterly meetings. The organi- zation already has a balance of $15 in the treasury over and above the $105, contributed from last November’s roll call funds to the support of the county health nurse. Various forms of local work were discussed and tentative plans outlined for the membership drive next November. It was brought out that the general hard times will probably increase the number of calls for help from the Red Cross, necessitating an extra effort to fill the treasury. Mrs. William Cleveland of Seminary was elected chairman of the branch’s Nursing Committee and representatives in each community, including Mrs. C. W. Oliver in Baileys Cross Roads; Mrs. C. E. Howdershell, Lincolnia; Mrs. Martin Webb, Annandale; Mrs. E. R. ‘White, Springfield; Mrs. B. A. Johnson, Masbnville, and Mrs. C. R. Moran, Mer- rifield. Mrs. John W. Brookfield, sr., was ap- pointed chairman of Junior Red Cross work in the district; Miss Sadie Jones, field representative of the National Red Cross in charge of Virginia Chapters; Mrs. Russeil Lynn, president, and Mrs. E. D. Vosbury, treasurer of the county chapter, and Mrs. Herbert Seamans, county health nurse, assisted in organ- {zing the new branch. WISE FAIR DATES Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. A Mystery Story By Mary Dahlberg DAGGER SOON BECAME she resolved not to be so robbed of love again. Yet she tolerated no familiarity from Vaneering, and they almost never talked sentimentally. The bond between them was deeper, as_a matter of fact: their enjoyment of flying and the mute at- traction of two violent and untram- meled characters. Dagger never wearied of his company, and gradually he came to monopolize | her time. If they were not at the flying fields they were driving somewhere, in- variably at headlong speed, dancing or dining. Hostesses, now, invited Vaneer- ing through Dagger: “Oh, and you'l bring Jack, won't you?” No party was complete without them, for Dagger was becoming as well known as he was. The local press had devoted columns to her qualification as a pilot, and special arti- cles were being published all over the country. As far as Vaneering was concerned, she more or less blindly dodged reflec- tion. He was attractive, a pleasant com- rade, whose presence started those dis- turbing little currents of emotion which had first frightened and, finally, soothed her. He had a vice, however, which bothered Dagger occasionally. A heavy drinker, there were times when he over- stepped her mark. At such times he ‘was scrupulous to avoid her, but she al- ways heard of it. Willy, maybe, would come in, pop-eyed, to report: “Hear about Vaneering’s bust last night? He crowned a feller down in Danny’s—wanted to fight the M. P.’s. I tell you he's wild when he drops off the wagon.” Dagger spoke to him once on the sub- ject, and he was winningly penitent. T know I'm a pup,” he admitted. “But every once in a while I just have to cut loose. And you know I do hold my liquor pretty well.” INSIS HORL Are you prepared to render first aid and quick comfort the moment your youngster has an upset of any sort? Could you do the right “thing—immediately— though the emergency came with- out warning—perhaps tonight? Castoria is a mother’s standby at such times. After that—well, a fiyer can't afford not to have full control over himself.” He laughed shortly. “Full control is right! In France a pilot who can't keep control after he's full will crash in a weck. They fight drunk half the time.” “But you mustn’t,” she protested. “Of | course, you'll crash sooner or later, if youre drunk. Anybody would.” He shrugged, his eyes, inflamed and pouched, lighting up with a blend of affection and anfusement. “Regular little saint you are! Don't worry about me. We all crash sooner or later.” “You mustn't talk like that, Jack. Why, if you—-" “Would you care a little bit?” She forced herself to impersonality. T'd care if any one crashed. It's— it's so unnecessary.” Weeks slipped aw and without realizing it the two began to take each other for granted. They excited the derision of their young friends by the decorousness of their relations; they did not know that the repression they prac- ticed—mainly through Dagger's self- control, the automatic recollection in | each moment of temptation of the mo- ment she had slipped with Howard— comprised in itself the essential ele- ment of danger. Touching each other, they thrilled. Each was happier for the sound of the other’s voice. All the requisites of physical attraction bound them A match, and—the sparks that ,mckercd in two hearts would flare up into one flame. & Of course, this was merely a question of time, and the match was struck alight, as might have been supposed, without any warning.
