GOREARDOIL AN RONGLOSE NRACE “Alfalfa Bil”” Murray Leads Oklahoma Gubernatorial T Field. By the Associated Press. OKLAHOMA CITY, July 30—T. P. Gore, blind former Senator, who drop- ped out of the political world for 10 years only to stage a spectacular come- back, and Charles J. Wrightsman, mil- lionaire oil man of Tulsa, today were racing neck and neck for the lead in the contest for the Democratic sena- tarial nomination in Oklahoma. As returns came in from yesterday's primary f wétsme apoarent that Gore and Wrightsman would be forced to| battle it out ror the nomination in ‘ae run-off primary, August 12. Gore and Wrightsman were far ahead of the fleld in the race for the Demo- cratic senatorial nomination and the lead see-sawed back and forth as re- turns were tabulated from yesterday's primary. With 1,680 of the State's 3,338 precincts reported, Gore gained a Iha!:’t advantage. The vote was: re, 34,906; Wrightsman, 34,687. A veteran of early Oklahoma poli- tics, W. H. (Alfalfa Bill) Murray, who came back from Bolivia only recently after an unsuccessful attempt to es- tablish a colony, was running so far ahead of his nearest opponent for the | Democratic nomination for governor that his friends claimed a run-off would not be necessary when the complete vote was counted. Murray had nearly a 2-to-1 vote over his nearest opponent, Frank Buttram, Oklahoma City oil millionaire, who only this year entered politics. E. B. Howard. former Congressman of Tulsa, who had shifted throughout the night for third place with M. E. Trapp, former Gov- ernor, was in third place again today. Returns from 1766 of the State's ination for Governor gave Murray 70, 758; Buttram, 38,033; Howard, 22,224; M. E. Trapp, former Governor, 21,713; Prank Bailey, 7,305. Senator W. B. Pine, Republican in- cumbent, apparently was renominated without appreciable opposition. Ira A. Hill of Cherokee, a leader of the Senate, led “Big Jim” Harris, for- | mer national committeeman, for the Republican nomination for Governor, | 6,694 to 3,817 in returns from 320 pre- cinets. Rexford B. Cragg of Chandler, the third candidate, had only 960 votes. T. P. | ‘W. H. MURRAY (Upper). GORE. | | incumbents apparently were assured of | renomination. | E. B. Swank, Democrat, retired two | years ago from the fifth district by the | Republican landslide, apparently Wwas | renominated in a divided field, while U. | S. Stone, Republican incumbent, had | strong, but apparently unsuccessful, op- position from E. E. Blake, who clashed with him on flood-control policies in committee hearings at Washington, where Blake appeared as an expert. ‘Wesley Disney, Tulsa attorney, was leading for the Democratic nomination | lican renomination. In 115 of the Garber had THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON. in the first district, with Henry Craig of second. the nor- only mal Republican stronghold of the State, the incumbent, M. C. Garber, 3] it- 1y had repulsed the threat of Carl Haun of Blackwell, president of the Winches- ter Oil & Gas Co., and cinched Re) dl‘:‘ triet's 425 precincts 3,624 vates to Haun's 2,108. Manuel Herrick, who _entertained Washington with his exploits as an aviator during his one term as a - sentative several years ago, trailed a poor third with 168 votes. In the remaining districts Democratic incumbents either had no opposition or met negligible competition. RUM CARGO IS SEIZED U. S. Patrol Captures Canadian Motor Boat Near Golden Gate.
