BRITISH ELECTION ' DATE IS UNGERTAIN Lobby Expert Guesses Divid- ed Between November and Next Spring. By the Associated Press. LONDON, July 30.—Lobby experts at the House of Commons are about equal- 1y divided in forecasting the date of the coming general election. One section is certain it will come in November—the ?mersequflly certain it won't happen before Spring. A cabinet minister, ‘h!n asked which date he favored, replied ‘Safety first—I intend to be ready in November.” At a rtecent meeting of the Labor party the prime minister mentioned the possibility of a general election toward the end of the year. Since that remark his government came within two votes of being defeated. Many observers feel that a general election will be a genuine probability as soon as the new register of voters comes into operation the middle of Oc- tober. Two important events come in Oc- tober, the Imperial Conference and the Indian Round Table Conference. No matter how the Conservative party may regret that the Imperial conference will be in the hands of the Socialist government, the opportunity for avolding that contingency through a general election seems to have slip- ped by. No responsible party leader wants to make a political rty ques- tion out of the Indian situation nor in- terfere with the Round Table Confer- ence by forcing a general election. But there are many other reasons for an early election. The continued growth of unemployment under the present administration almost forces Ramsay MacDonald to ask for the country's verdict on his efforts. The government’s majority in the House of | Commons on this issue has been re- duced to 29. To complicate matters three. distinct groups within the Labor party itself are each putting forward different plans for solving the unem- ployment evil. ‘The voters will 'have a plethora of plans to choose from when the pro- posals of Lloyd George's Liberals and Stanley Baldwin's Conservatives are added to those of the Labor party. Seek Arab-Jew Settlement. _ JERUSALEM, July 30 (#).—The gov- ernment has undertaken new negotia- tions in an effort to reach a settlement of the Wailing Wall controversy be- tween the Jews and the Arabs. Influ- ential private persons on both sides also are endeavoring to mediate the dis- ute. Efforts thus far, however, have n unsuccessful. The Wailing Wall Commission announced before ending its recent hearings that it would be ready to accept proposals for a volun- tary settlement until September Be Cool! Be Calm! Be Dainty!
