FINANCIAL. (HECK TO DECLN INSLVER PLANNED Government May Act Expand Uses of Metal. _Research Urged. to BY the Associated Press. intervention ¢f the Government to the present price decline of sil- Ver and to stabilize the value of the metal looms as a strong possibility. o this end Secretary of Commerce | Lamont has forwarded to three branches of his department a recent communiea- from Senator Oddie of Nevada posing extensive research, with the ‘eonsamption of the metal may be expanded, with the request these de- partment heads consider the outlined suggestions carefully, reporting on the practicability of such a movement. If the findings give any promise of prac- tigal benefits the Commerce Depart- nt will do everything in its power to supply remedial measures, it was said here today. ator Oddle's request was that an - riation of $100,000 be allotted to the partment for research work in the Bureau of Standards, the Bureau of Mines and the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce. The fund for the Standards Bureau is designed to expand consumption of silver in the arts, following a former inquiry by the bureau as to tarnish- resisting silver alloys. The Senator also ‘voiced the opinion there were also other possibilities for increasing the use ef the metal in industrial ways which should be the subject of research. Monetary requirements by this branch's Tesearch were set at $50,000. It was suggested that the Mines Bu- reau undertake an investigation of the economic relationship between silver, eopper, Jead and zinc, with & view of determining more precisely the declines in the production of these metals, and the economic ramifications of silver in the general economy of the Nation. Senator Oddie also suggested that the Bureau of Foreign Commerce conduct inquiries concerning silver and eco- nomic conditions in China and. India, major markets for the metal. “The ex- tremely low price of silver is a most important factor in the present dis- turbed economic conditions throughout the world,” he says, “and it not only seems justified but highly necessary that the Government should conduct investigations along the lines suggested with a view to determining the best possible solution of the problem.” The prices for the base metals, copper, lead and zinc, which are produced with sil- ver, are low at the present time, and this accentuates to a marked degree the adverse effect of the low price of sil- xu;?’ the production of the base NEW YORK, June 25.—The follow- is today’s summary of important corporation news prepared by Stand- and Statistics Co., Inc, New York, for News Trend. BY F. H. RICHARDSON. Special Dispateh to The Star. NEW YORK, June 25'—Depressed by fresh stock liquidation and another large total of new issues, bonds drifted into new low ground again today in a com- paratively dull session. The renewal of forced selling, as equity margins again needed extending, affected even high- grade issues. The $118,115,000 Cities Service issue of 5 per cent, or rather that part of ‘which stockholders of the company have not exercised their prior rights to buy, was publicly offered at 100 and was traded on the Curb Exchange at that figure. The bonds are convertible into common stock at prices ranging from $27.50 on December 1, 1930, to $39.75 a share on June 2, 1935, the privilege ceasing on December 1, 1935, Other new fictations included $4,000,- 000 Porto Rican bonds and some small municipal issues. The Philadelphia Co. offered 100,000 shares of $6 preferred su)fik at $99.50 a share. This issue went well. Among the convertibles both Ameri- can Telephone 414s and International |G Telephone 4!2s were off a point. Phila- delphia & Reading Coal & Iron 6s went into new low ground and later retraced part of the loss. The ‘whole group was heav) Losses were small, but nevertheless uUnanimous in the high grade section, Baltimore & Ohio first 4s, Canadian P: cific 4s, Southern Pacific 4 (1968), Frisco A 4s, Chesapeake & Ohlo 415s, Dugquense Light 44, Columbia Gas 58 and American & Foreign Power 5s all had slight recessions. Heavier selling with resultant wider drops, characterized the second-grade rails. Denver & Rio Grand Western 55 dropped a point to a new low, Frisco 4%4s lost-a similar amount also to reach & new bottom mark. St. Paul 55 lost a | Germ: point and so did Missouri-Pacific 4s and Seaboard Airline 6s. These wide losses were partly attributable to market con- ditions, but the heavy selling of rail- road stocks also had its effect. Washington Stock Exchange SALES. Wash. R. & E. 45—$500 at 85. D. C.
