lTri.bulltiom of a Tall Man. —By Burtis I BURTIS 3-s MOVIES AND MOVIE PEOPLE BY MOLLIE HOLLYWOOD, June 17 (N.AN.A.).— When a horde of war veterans swooped down on the film colony’s water front at Malibu Sunday there was excitement galore among the professional group at the famous hideaway. Claiming that they had right to post| claims under a congressional act of | 1880, which permits war veterans to gecure by entry notice unappropriated | lands, some 136 veterans posted steel- framed notices along the water front of the colony's favorite beach and pro- ceeded to fulfill the requirements of | seizure of “unappropriated lands” by | commencing to erect a cabin on part of the seized property. ' It's many a year since we've had claim jumping out here in the wild m& but the lads who fought in the had to be ousted with a few tear s bombs and have a posse level guns 2t them before they would talk reason. The veterans contend that the old 5 grant from which the Rancho Malibu title has descended for scores of years does not include the water front. Motion picture stars who have built homes ranging from $5,000 to $75,000 | at Rancho Malibu have built on leased land. Not one of them owns the prop- erty on which they have so gayly thrown up the handsome beach cottages in which they spend their leisure hours. Forty miles Trom Hollywood, protected from hoi pollol by the fact that there 15 but one telephone (at the general gtore), the Malibu Beach colony repre- gentS that privacy for which motion picture stars really long, whether the world gives them credit for it or not. Because it offered these things, the children of fortune were willing to build on Mrs. May K. Rindge's property un- der the terms of her leases. The fact that her title to the property is clear| was proven as recently as 1928, when she leased two miles of water front.to a real estate corporation for-a sum -of $6.000.000. Mrs. Rindge's family has held Malibu for some 40 years, The veterans in question had collected about $2,500 among them and had re- tained- an attorney. Their arrests—at least the arrest of their leaders—was| MERRICK. | followed by release on $10 bail each. But yesterday morning their spokes- n, Raymond G. La None, filed his | claim with the local registrar. Uncle | Sam is getting ready to turn his eagle eye on the entire procedure. Hollywood Sundays begin a-horseback —posting is perennially popular in & colony where waist lines come first— progress to swimming pools or the surf 't Malibu and carry on at the charming pers which are a feature of the col- ony and which break up only when Monday morning greetings are going around. Better talk than that to be found about the Basil Rathebones' swimming pool would be difficult to locate. The host and hostess are famous for their culture, travel and talents. They are magnets for the brilliant rophisticates who come this way. Basil Rathbone's tastes include an exhaustive study of criminology, which he has pursued both in England and America. Added to this is a decided flair for music, much of his spare time from the studio being given over to study of singing at the present time. (Copyrieht, 1930 by Morth American News- Recent observations and investiga- tions of drug addicts indicate that the morphine victim 15 not wholly hopeless, as is generally supposed. The addition to morphine is not characterized by physical deterioration or impairment of physical fitness aside from the addi tion per se. This may seem highly prising. Yet detailed clinical exa: nations of many patients gave no er dence of change in the ecirculatory, hepatic, renal or endrocine functions. When it is considered that the’ persons -under- observation had been addicted for at least five years, some of them as long as 20 years, these negative obser- vations are highly signjficant.. Thus there are substantial grounds for the belief that, were it possible” Yelieve the addict of his addiction, complete rehabilithtion might be expected.. €1 Bhip's coal bin. 7 Slight elevation. 11 Period of time. 14 County in New York. 15 Convey property. 17 Seal. 18 Shlmg. 13 Comitat in Hungary. 20 Story. 22 Lure, 23 ‘Tangle. 24.
